I have a Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Sony Vaio VGN-FW51MF laptop with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 video card. The laptop is relatively new (1 and a half years) and I have not changed the OS or anything since.

The problem is that when playing certain games (or as I remember in the past, connecting to a screen via HDMI) the computer would go BSOD. The crash is completely spontaneous, it can easily not happen for a whole hour play through but then also could happen 5 minutes in. Also it happens in select games only, for example Dragon Age 2 (which is mildly taxing) is not prone to it, though Team fortress 2 is very prone to it (not on orange maps however...). My only conclusion is that it effects Source or Unreal engine games (though thats a lot), but this is only speculation. This hasn't bothered too much before, however it is now becoming more and more apparent. If anybody could help me in any way it would be greatly appreciated! The BSOD report is

I've attached the health report and the dump (hopefully all according to guidelines) and I'm planning on doing a memory check tonight, as it seems to be the first step to finding out the problem (or so a friend told me...) Unfortunately my own computer savy is very limited and I hope a more knowledgeable soul could help. Again any help is very very well received.

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: ffffffffc0000094, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: fffff880047677e9, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: fffff88006db6ec8, Exception Record Address

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my query! I am currently trying this out. My only concern is that downloading the "latest" driver from the sony website gets me a nearly 2 year old driver... Will that not increase the likelyhood of BSODs? Again thanks so much for your help! It is immensely appreciated!

The timestamp doesn't really matter that much, the graphics driver sounds like if it is corrupt and just needs a reinstallation.

You're welcome for the help.

Done everything, but BSODs still there. So far hasn't made any minidumps or error statement, when it happens it gets stuck so I have to power button turn it off... Thanks again for all your help!

Sorry to hear your still having problems, to answer the question in your second post.

MS memtest is not very good, you should use Memtest86+, it's free and used by many enthusiasts and highly recommended.

Thanks for all your help! One query though, when I reinstalled the driver I managed to go through the device manager then video card, then specify which folder the new driver was at. However if I try to install the driver from the ATI package directly it says failed to load detection driver.

Does this make it more likely to BSOD? Is there any way to fix it? Thank you very much once again!

When upgrading your graphic driver you need to remove all traces of the current driver.
Use Guru3D - Driver Sweeper to get rid of everything from the old driver.
Select only the graphics driver to clean.

Then download and install the new graphics driver, best to get it from the ATI website.
