Hi guys,

This is the first time this computer has crashed.... and I'm not sure how much to panic because I'm not the administrator, but I AM responsible for it :|. The error was '1RQL not less or equal' and it initiated a physical dump. I have attached the files as mentioned in the sticky. Do let me know what I can do about it.

Hello and welcome aboard, tudan :)

You need to upgrade your intel HD graphics driver, and graphics media accelerator.

Type "dxdiag" (without quotes) in the start menu seatch box and click the resulting link. Click the "display" tab of the resulting window, and follow what is listed against "chip type" . Search it in google, and accept the link that takes you to Intel download center. Download and install it.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL also causes for virus scanners . I would suggest you to get rid of Norton and to use Microsoft Security Essentials - Free Antivirus for Windows, as Norton is a very common cause of such crashes.

Thank you for the welcome and helpful reply, Arc :)

I did as you asked. My chip type was Intel (R) HD Graphics Family, and Googling that led me to http://downloadcenter.intel.com and Intel® HD Graphics Driver for Windows 7. Unfortunately, when I was installing it, I was told 'the driver being installed is not validated for this computer'. Googling that again led me to an Intel FAQ where I was told to grab drivers from my laptop manufacturer. Digging around on Dell's site brought me here: Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States] but for some reason the automatic driver suggestion script did not work. Within the general list, none of the Recommended drivers seemed Monitor related. The Optional, display related drivers did not seem applicable to my screen (vostro 3450, only 14"). Do let me know how I should proceed.

About the antivirus, well, I honestly didn't know that MS had a free (MS does stuff for free??) antivirus. I am puzzled as to why my company uses Norton if there is a cheaper, equivalent alternative. But it's a company laptop and I don't know if they will be willing to let me get rid of norton.

So it is a company laptop ? Then the best policy is to connect the IT department, as any type of changes may not be granted by them .

I trust internet-peer-reviewed boards more than I do my IT people :), but you're right, your solutions will be hampered. I'll go ask them then.
