Hi,
I had lost my windows 7 partition after trying to put an XP install disk on a usb drive and the program wiped my partition. I then used testdisk to recover the partition and to my surprise it recovered the entire thing as the xp thing had just deleted the partition. I then tried to boot into it but since I've had said BSOD. I installed a new windows 7 install on a seperate partition since then and have been running from it but would love to get my old install back. I have tried running all fixboot options, etc. FixMBR will tell me it has repaired it but when I try rebuildbcd it tells me it cant locate the install, even though it'll ask me if the windows 7 install is the one i want.
I have run a chkdisk which completed with no problems and an SFC on the installation which told me there were corrupt files it couldnt fix. I am attaching the CBS.log. Can someone help me out? Thanks

I assume you have a Windows 7 disc since you did another install. Have you tried replacing the corrupted files on the bad install with files from the good install? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html OPTION THREE should help you determine which files need to be replaced. The tip is also helpful so you have the right permissons/owership set to be able to replace the corrupted files. You should only need to change ownership/permissions on the bad install and use copy and paste from the new install.

while the sfc told me there were corrupted files that could not be repaired, i couldn't find any of them in the sfc.txt thing that was outputted. i'll re-run it and see what happens.

edit: still nothing, just telling me it verified diff components

Can you upload the sfcdetails.txt that is generated through OPTION THREE? Also, how are you running sfc /scannow on the old installation? Are you running through a repair disc, install disc, or through the working Windows installation you now have?

I'm running it from the working installation I have now by setting the drive to the old installation, and running sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D:\ offwindir=D:\windows
My install disk doesn't allow me to run anything on the old installation as its a diff edition, the edition that came preinstalled was Home Premium (probably Asus OEM customized) and the install disc I have is Ultimate.

Looks clean. Are you still unable to boot into the old installation?

Yup, still BSOD's on me with KnownDLL verification failed. I'm getting to the point where I'm about to just move everything over from the old install and nuke the partition, losing hope in fixing this one.

This is for documenting purposes:

To fix the problem,
Go into Windows Recovery by inserting the Windows 7 CD and boot from CD
Then choose Repair (no effect as repair will fail, but wait for it to complete, then...) > select Advance, command prompt
Then get the previous registry backup using the following command:
Code:
xcopy c:\windows\system32\config\regback c:\windows\system32\config
Restart and select Repair my computer again! It'll work and ask for Restart! Restart and it's cool to go!

Note that this is for failed Windows Update problems. E.g. is when system hung during critical Windows Update.
