Hi,

My OCZ Vestor SSD died the other day, but luckily I was able to get the ~120 GB of data I had on my drive off of it in Ubuntu (I didn't keep backups, that's changed now :p), and copied it back on to a 300 GB Velociraptor (I used GNU ddrescue for the backup and dd to copy the file on to the Velociraptor). Thing is, while diskpart and Disk Manager both report about a 300 GB partition, Windows Explorer is still showing the 120 GB space from my SSD. How do I get the space to reappear in Explorer???

Aha!

Here you go:

PartitionWizard.png

That explains it, this shows a 120 GB partition! How come everything but this and Explorer shows otherwise? Also, would GPartEd show this? It's my preferrred partitioning tool, so if it would show this then I'll reboot in to it and fix this up.

It was the "DD" command that you did, it does a bit to bit copy. The partition information the disk information was all copied to the other drive. Now what you need todo is pull everything that you want to save off the drive and format then put everything back.

I'll be getting a new SSD to replace the Vector soon (going over to Samsung now :P), would it work to just copy the partition from the Velociraptor to the Samsong with GPartEd? Or would that cause the same problems? Asking because I've previously copied my 2 TB RAID0 partition over to a 2 TB external drive using GPartEd with no problems whatever.

Hi there
GPARTED is just fine - also unlike Minitool Partition wizard which says it has a bootable USB - there's no way to make one -- even the PAID version doesn't throw up the menu that it says exists on the site - especially if you don't have a physical DVD drive and try and mount the ISO as a virtual drive (Windows 8/8.1 has this feature as standard).

I was warned about the PRO version of Partition wizard -- DO NOT BUY IT - IT'S A RIP OFF. Stick with GPARTED - Free - easy to use, can make a bootable USB, and supports ALL partition types (not just basic Windows ones).

Cheers
jimbo

Awesome, thanks Jimbo :) Once I get the Samsung SSD I'll just copy the partition over with GPartEd and then resize it to match the drive size :) Marking the thread as solved.
