BSOD and Display Problems!

I keep getting BSODs frequently (atleast twice a week) and was hoping someone could help me with this. Sadly I dont have the minidump files,but I do know the names of the files that caused it.. The reason I dont have the minidump files is - the minidump folder gets cleared after I reboot, I didnt manually remove them..

But I got a copy of the file when I got it last week and I sent it to an admin in another forum, this is what he sent me

and yesterday after the bsod I ran blue screen view and it showed that 2 files were involved -
1. dxgmms1.sys
2. dxgkrnl.sys

I'm assuming it has something to do with the VGA, I also get these weird coloured boxes on my screen at times and when I move around the window thats open at the time, it disappears.. Please note that I have the latest VGA drivers installed..

The VGA is Nvidia GTS 360M - since this is a laptop vga card I dont think I can replace it..

Another problem that really annoys me is once the display gets turned off automatically, I cant get it back on, I have to restart the laptop! After the screen saver, I have set it to turn off the display in 15 minutes, so when it gets turned off, cant get the screen up.. but I hear the fans working so I know the pc is working.. even the USB devices are working.. but what ever I do, the display is just blank.. It wasnt always like this, it happened after updating the drivers a in feb( I think) and I have kept the drivers up-to-date since then but this issue persists..

Really hope this can be solved without any hardware repair! I purchased this laptop from the US and currently living in Australia, not sure if the warranty is valid.. but then again I think the warranty period is over..

If you are running a Cleaner Program (e.g: CCleaner) - uninstall it until we are done troubleshooting.

Yes I have CC Cleaner installed, and just uninstalled it.

Will attach the required files but please note that the minidump folder is empty. for some reason it gets cleared after restarting the computer.

The CCleaner had probably removed the dump files after the BSOD. Remove it and wait for a BSOD - then upload the files.

I didnt run CC Cleaner after the BSOD (unless it removes them automatically), but I think the reason the minidump folder and all my recent files get cleaned after a boot is I ran this 'vulnerability scan' on Kaspersky IS and it did some changes, I uninstalled Kaspersky IS a couple of months ago but the changes it made to the system are still there. Another change it did was disabling autorun on external devices, when I plug in a USB device I have to manually open it, no autorun window pops up now.. I didnt mind doing all this as Kaspersky said its essential for added security.

So if this is actually the case, I will lose the minidump files unless I manually get a copy right after the BSOD and paste it elsewhere..

Anyway so is it useless to follow the BSOD posting instructions and submitting the files at this moment ?

Ok under realiability history there were 2 errors about the BSOD, both said "video hardware error". The description is as below

Description
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000116 (0xfffffa800a5dc010, 0xfffff8800fbed970, 0xffffffffc000009a, 0x0000000000000004). A dump was saved in: C:\windows\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 042411-17050-01.

Under problem reporting I can open the .dmp files in a temp location, I think its the same file (the date was the same) but it was in the temp folder. I will submit that as well.

About the display not coming back on after automatically turning it off, what do you think the problem is ?

STOP 0x116/0x117 = VIDEO_TDR_ERROR = Graphics Card Fail/Graphics Driver
- Boot into Safe Mode with Networking
- Uninstall the Display Drivers (Device Manager)
- Use Driver Sweeper to sweep the traces of the display driver Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
- Install the latest version NVIDIA DRIVERS 270.61 WHQL
- Reboot into normal mode

Ok did everything and rebooted, start up took way longer than usual after this.. normally about 50secs - 90 secs, now 150-200seconds.. but I guess this will be ok after the next few reboots..

Also there was a nvidia settings icon in the systray which I found very useful that seems to be missing now..

Hope this has fixed the issue for good. Thanks for your help

PS- if you know how to get the nvidia settings icon back, please let me know. I tried searching for it but couldnt find.. When I click on customize in the systray can see it under previous icons.. I used this to check for updates, otherwise theres no way to findout when a newer driver version is out.

I will see if this solves the display turn off issue as well.. (When its turned off automatically cant get it back on)

yes there is, though its called nvidia control panel. also when I right click on the desktop I can get to the nvidia control panel. but earlier in the systray icon I was able to check for updates and update from there itself instead of going to the site, and also it will notify when an update is released.

The display turn off issue seems to be ok now!! Thank you very much!! However have to wait for another week or 2 to see if I get another BSOD. Please let me know if you know how to get the NVidia Systray icon back. It wasnt there in the earlier versions, I got it after updating to the current version, but after removing it completely and installing it seems to have disappeared..

ok thanks! I did some online research - sadly all the threads I checked werent resolved or they had different issues.. most of them were for different OSes.. 2007-2009..
