I just bought a brand new HP laptop on Thursday, by the time I got it home it was already kinda late so I didn't play with it much - but I did notice at one point the laptop had restarted itself while I was out of the room. I didn't think much of it until friday when it crashed 6 times between 2 -9:30pm. I finally gave up and I'm returning it to Best Buy today for an exchange, but just so I can avoid this with my next one any debugging or cause of the issue advice would be appreciated.

programs installed after purchase: world of warcraft, core temp ..... nothing else was installed that didn't come with it. The crashes occurred kinda variously, sometimes while playing wow other times while doing nothing or running norton antivirus. Also noted that the cpu temp was around 77c each time it crashed.

I ran windows debug on all of them myself and these are what it said the probable causes were:

11/5/09 7:30pm Probably caused by : ntoskrnl.exe
11/6/09 2:15pm Probably caused by : ntoskrnl.exe
11/6/09 2:21pm Probably caused by : ntoskrnl.exe
11/6/09 3:21pm Probably caused by : ntoskrnl.exe
11/6/09 8:15pm Probably caused by : ntoskrnl.exe
11/6/09 9:19pm Probably caused by : ntkrnlmp.exe
11/6/09 9:33pm Probably caused by : amdppm.sys

unfortunately I have no clue what any of that means so any advice would be appreciated.

dump files attached.

Update your chipset drivers and bios for your motherboard.

This is causing your bsod - "amdppm.sys" - it's the processor driver.

Get that updated and issue should resolve. The current version is probably heating the laptop too much.

Select software and drivers HP Pavilion dv4-2045dx Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

so while doing what you suggested it gave me yet another BSOD
