Solved bsod cant figure this one out

I just tried to run the Windows setup to confirm that atapi/ide driver name and it came back with "cannot run set up may be corrupt, etc" Tried another disk, same thing then tried a commercial dvd and it wouldnt load. I wonder if the problem is to do with a faulty dvd drive? Could this be giving blue screens? I know in the old days an ide cd would freeze pc's with any faults (tho my current is sata)

What is the thinking behind the ssd power down?

Thanks
Mike

Have you tried removing the DVD drive to test stability? Any bad hardware can cause any number of problems.

The SSD Power Cycle is essentially like rebooting your system but for the SSD hardware. When you reboot your system, it cleans out temporary memory corruption (for the most part). This allows the system to run cleaner and prevents lock-ups and slow-downs in Windows. Doing a full reboot by removing power sources, holding down the power button for 30 seconds ensures all power is drained from the system through closing the electronics loop. That resets the hardware on the motherboard and the RAM so all memory corruption of removed and the hardware/software connections with the BIOS are reset.

With the SSD power cycle, it cleans up any corruption in the drive and resets the software/hardware connections with the SSD firmware (which is similar to the BIOS).

Thanks mate, I suppose the next step is to remove the dvd drive and see what happens. If that doesnt work I'll do the power down thing.I'll report back after a few days unless I get another crash.
Cheers
Mike

Seems to be a different error...

That crash is DirectX/graphics card related. DirectX comes installed with Windows, so this may indicate Windows corruption. It may also be that you have corrupted drivers or a graphics card hardware problem.

Follow the steps for Diagnosing basic problems with DirectX. To re-install your display card drivers as outlined in the DirectX link, use the following steps.

  1. Download the drivers you want for your display card(s)
  2. Click Start Menu
  3. Click Control Panel
  4. Click Uninstall a program
  5. For AMD:
    • Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager if it is listed (this should remove all AMD graphics software and drivers)
    • If AMD Catalyst Install Manager is not listed, use the following method to uninstall the graphics drivers (this applies to onboard graphics, as well):
      1. Click Start Menu
      2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
      3. Click Manage
      4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
      5. Expand Display adapters
      6. Do the following for each adapter (in case you have multiple display cards)
        • Right click the adapter
        • Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
        • Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
      Alternatively:
      1. Login as an adminstrative user
      2. Click Start Menu
      3. Click Control Panel
      4. Click Hardware and Sound
      5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
      6. Expand Display adapters
  6. Restart your computer after uninstalling drivers for all display cards
  7. Install the driver you selected for the display cards once Windows starts

Remember to try multiple versions of the graphics drivers, download them fresh, and install the freshly downloaded drivers.

You may also want to install your AMD drivers without the Catalyst Control Center/Vision Engine Control Center software. Download the version of ATI drivers that you want to install, and then do the following steps.
  • Start the installation program to install your drivers and ATI software. When you get to the option to Express/Custom install, cancel the installation. Your drivers should now exist in C:\AMD\Support\xx-x_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc where the x's replace your version number of the driver software.
  • Uninstall all AMD software related to your graphics card by uninstalling AMD Catalyst Install Manager in Start Menu -> Control Panel -> Uninstall a program
  • If AMD Catalyst Install Manager is not listed, use the following method to uninstall the graphics drivers:
    1. Click Start Menu
    2. Right Click My Computer/Computer
    3. Click Manage
    4. Click Device Manager from the list on the left
    5. Expand Display adapters
    6. Do the following for each adapter (in case you have multiple display cards)
      • Right click the adapter
      • Click Uninstall (do not click OK in the dialog box that pops up after hitting Uninstall)
      • Put a tick in Delete driver software for this device (if this option is available, otherwise just hit OK) and hit OK
    Alternatively:
    1. Login as an adminstrative user
    2. Click Start Menu
    3. Click Control Panel
    4. Click Hardware and Sound
    5. Click Device Manager (the last link under Devices and Printers)
    6. Expand Display adapters
  • Restart your computer.
  • Re-install your drivers from the C:\AMD\Support\xx-x_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc folder using a similar method to that in OPTION TWO of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/98073-drivers-install-vista-drivers-windows-7-a.html

Writhziden,

I ran sfc /verifyonly 3 times and got no integrity violations.

I ran dxdiag which came back fine except diaxdiag x 64 said the emu audio drivers were not digitally signed but these are the latest drivers.

I uninstalled the wdm drivers for the radeon card and installed the latest from the amd website.

So, I guess I just wait for the next crash?

Mike

Hi, had another crash almopst immediately on the non-msic side.
To be honest it was expected I guess the dvd is not the culprit.
See what you think of the crash dump,
Thanks for the help,
Mike

PS Im going to change the memory soonish (nothing to do with the crashing) and have decided on
Kingston 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Manufacturer ID: KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX which is on the Asus approved
vendors list. The voltages on the ram is 16.5v but apparently the board is 15v. Any views on that as I dont want to add anything causing errors that will stop me finding the solution to these blue screens.
Thanks mate,
Mike

Also, the i-series Intel CPUs do not like voltages above 1.5 V. Take that into consideration as well.

Please remove any CD/DVD virtualization software, such as Daemon Tools/Alcohol 120%, as they use a driver called sptd.sys that is known to cause BSODs. Use add/remove programs to remove the software. After removing the software, use the sptd.sys uninstaller to remove sptd.sys from the system.

Many use MagicISO - Convert BIN to ISO, Create, Edit, Burn, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter/extractor/editor as well, which is free.

Writhzidden, I ran scannow without any violations.
Dxdiag ran and said no problems found.
I already did a clean install only days ago and used the wdm drivers and amd's latest.
I uninstalled Alcohol and used the clean up tool.

I'm a bit flummoxed by this whole situation, and suspect hardware or hardware incompatability somewhere.
The previous box was rock solid, (and using the software and more that you have marked as suspect) the parts that have changed are: intel i7 [email protected], asus px68-v-lx
and ocz vertex 3 160gb ssd. The bits I've kept are: 8gb crucial ddr3:1300mhz, Ati radeon hd 4800 and the Emu 0404 soundcard. I suppose I could use the onboard graphics and see if that makes any difference. Have you any thoughts on my memory with this board?
Any other avenues I can explore?
Thanks

I need a bit more info to answer your question regarding the RAM: Download and install CPU-Z and Upload screenshots of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs. In the SPD tab, upload an image of each slot.

Also, in regards to the latest graphics card driver: A user contacted AMD the other day with a HD 4850 and was told that the newer drivers are designed more for 6000 and 7000 cards and he should revert back to 10.6. Newer games require 11.7, and Microsoft Windows Update also recommends 11.7, so that is why I mentioned that driver in particular. Newest drivers may not work for your card.

Hi Mate,
I have installed the 11.7 drivers for the ati (which gives a driver version of 8.56.1.16)
Incidently, on the music partition changeing the driver made Cubase crash so had to revert to the newer one.
I've enclosed the screenshots you requested.
Thanks for the help.

PS I have a work machine that's giving problems but will start a seperate thread.

See no problems related to the RAM. How is the non-Music partition running, by the way?

So far OK, but I use the music side much more so it's hard to tell.
I'd like to find someway of making it crash but without knowing the problem
I presume that's not feasable?

I'm still thinking hardware because my (maybe faulty) logic tells me that there are 3 different components from the non crashing machine, mboard, cpu and ssd.
Faulty cpu's arent that common and the ssd has passed the usual tests.
That leaves the mboard but I have no real way of testing it other than to swap out which I'm loath to do, it's such a pain in the arse to rebuild the whole PC and I cant prove if it's faulty or not. Could be the psu even.

I'll try and stress out the non music side tomorrow (run a few youtube videos simultaneously with photoshop or something) and hopefully have another crash dump for some light reading for you!
Cheers,
Mike

Sounds good. I think it is important to find out whether the non-music side works well. That would at least narrow things down to software if it is stable.

Well, I've had no more crashes on the non music side (or the music side)
I have a new cpu fan to install so I thought I'd check the temps for comparison
before I install it later this coming week.

I noticed the cputin had a pretty high temp.
Should I be concerned or do you reckon it's a mis reported temp?

Thanks
Mike
