BSOD [Corrupt hard drive?]

I have a laptop, HDD is formatted into two partitions. On my non windows partition, when i do file copying over to it, or renaming a certain one file it will hang and I will get a BSOD. I can only assume that the hard drive, has some bad sectors or whatever on it, where that partition is physically.

I tried defragging that partition, it just BSOD again. Is there a way I can get the operating system to know that this area is bad and avoid using it. Better yet, shouldnt the hard drive be reporting errors to the OS so it knows?

I only know how to run a chkdisk while logged into windows through the GUI but it says the hard drive is in use so I cant, so how do I run one before booting windows. Will that fix my problem?

No option to schedule it, when I click cancel the schedule one comes up after, but if I click schedule, it just disappears.

How to Run Check Disk at Startup in Vista or Windows 7

Try Tews link, or try this:

1. Open an elevated command prompt.
2. In the elevated command prompt, type chkdsk C: /x/r/v and press Enter.
NOTE:
/x = take drive offline.
/r = do surface scan, check file integrity & fix any problems found.
/v = verbose mode, display what CHKDSK is doing.

I went in safe mode and did this.

chkdisk F: /f /r

What I got was after 10 min, another BSOD, restarted PC and had some hard drive initlization errors before boot manager would normally show, and that NTDLL was missing, i popped in repair cd and can boot now again though.

Will chkdsk F: /x/r/v give me a blue screen again?

Try Opening an elevated command prompt from your repair CD.

I did it on the cmd prompt on the install CD and i did chkdsk D: /x /r /v and it got to about 10% and then hung, waited about 45 minutes and I shutdown my computer..

i made the bootable cd, popped it in. Chose ata support, then it went on to say Loading DFT... waited for 30 minutes, and then tried again, same result.

May be time to replace the HD.
