Hi my Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop has been having the BSOD issues, these days if I shut the lid down, the laptop does not hibernate, even though the power settings are such.

I have got the blue screen a number of times, I have also restored the laptop to an earlier restore point, but it has not helped solve the problem.

I'm attaching the dump files as instructed, plz help me resolve this issue......

Thanks

Welcome to SevenForums.

Please upload your msinfo32.nfo file. To get this: Start Menu -> Type msinfo32 into the Search programs and files box -> When it opens, go to File, Save -> Save as msinfo32.nfo and save in a place you will remember -> Let it finish the process of gathering and saving the system info -> Right click the .nfo file, click send to compressed (zipped) folder -> Upload the .zip file here.

The BSOD seems to be cause by HotSpot shield driver and Symantec/Norton seems to be contributing to it. (FYI, Norton is a frequent cause of BSOD-s.) I would suggest you to uninstall Norton and see if the problem persists, replace with Microsoft Security Essentials at least to test.

Recommended antivirus program for Windows 7 based on stability compared to others:-

:warn: Do not start the free trial of Malware Bytes; remember to deselect that option when prompted.

Run a full scan with both (separately) once downloaded, installed and updated.

*Update all networking drivers.
*Update the Intel Storage drivers as well.
*How does the computer work in Safe mode?

Run the System File Checker that scans the of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed/modified, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible:

  • Click on the :orb:
  • Type CMD on Search
  • Left click and Run as Administrator
  • Type SFC /scannow
Full tutorial here:
Run Disk Check on your hard disk for file system errors and bad sectors on it:
Find drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
Let us know if any of this helps.

Thanks for the msinfo file. :)

1. Despite of everything being identical, there is no problem on his/her system but yours. That's the difference between the two. (or say...exchange yours with your friend, the situation will be reversed).

2. MSE and Malwarebytes, both are good enough. If you're afraid of viruses, you can run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/166445-windows-defender-offline.html and Anti-rootkit utility TDSSKiller anytime you want, they are free and do not consume much time.

3. These BSOD issues may not persist in the latest version of the antivirus software but I doubt because antivirus updates/change of settings/or drivers should never be a cause of a dreadful thing as BSOD. You may want to consult with the Norton Users Discussion Forum - Norton Community and/or see what they have to say. They would probably say something similar to what I said, uninstall completely and reinstall the product etc.

For the time being, perform all the suggestions and let us know your feedback

Thanks KoolKat, the issue of BSOD seems to be resolved as of now:D

however the machine switches off on its own when the lid is shut down(on battery), even though the power settings are for it to hibernate....... and on power the machine sleeps and I have press power button to shut it down and restart, as the screen is off and it doesn't get going even after touching any key on the key board.........

OK. You might want to see if there are any updates from the Dell software you have. The picture seems to look okay.

Is the battery fully charged while putting to sleep?

I'll see if there are any updates from dell....

the laptop is behaving in a funny manner, when on battery or on power the hard disk does not shut down and hence even if the lid is shut the laptop is supposed to hibernate, which it does not do and its on till the time battery discharges completely............ and when its on,power plugged in it will still not hibernate and when I open the lid the screen is off and it will not restart unless the shutdown button is pressed...........

How long has it been since you had a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7?

If never then you're running on an inherently corrupt factory preinstall that lards sponsored bloatware and useless duplicate utilties onto the OS, throttling it from its native instantaneous state.

I would strongly consider the reinstall, or at least Clean Up Factory Bloatware.

Have you run the Dell Diagnostics lately? I'd try running it now by tapping the F12 key at boot to boot it to run.

thnx............ I'll try all that is suggested :)
