BSOD issue... any help appreciated

Hi all,

Put together a new system a couple of months ago and have been getting sporadic blue screen errors. These occur either both at startup and during use. I had one the other day immediately after unplugging my Usb soundcard. For a while i had this blamed on my Graphics card - i think after reading a thread somewhere else, so yesterday I removed the card and attached a single monitor straight to the motherboard... This morning bsod with my coffee! (always leaves a bitter taste)

Regretfully, there is no dump file in there. Please see:

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
Under the Write Debugging Information header
Select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
OK your way out.
Reboot if changes have been made.

You are running SmartDocter and it appears to have crashed at least twice.
If you are OC-ing with it and not just monitoring temps, please go back to default values. Once stable and the cause is found, you can always go back to OC-ing...


You have multiple warnings on Windows Updates:

Please also go to your Maintenance Center and check the Windows Update status. Make sure you are up to date, do them one by one manually if needed. If you need to reset: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

Thanks for your reply,

I've followed your instructions, so minidumps should now be enabled and windows is now fully up to date. Do I now have to wait until another Bsod and then repost the data?

As for smartdoctor, I am not using the Asus card at the moment so have removed smartdoctor. I never used it to overclock the graphics card though.

I am not 100% sure but you still seem to have old tweaking stuff for your Graphics card on that is crashing:

Max.exe should be a part of Nvidia software package for overclocking. So my guess is, you are still OC-ing without knowing.

Also I expect you still have problems in your Devices screen (yellow excl mark?)

ASUS Bluetooth    USB\VID_0B05&PID_179C\6&DF2EE03&0&7    This device cannot start.

As a test, disable this bluetooth device.

Your last dumps however, blames a RAID/HDD driver mv91xx.sys
You seem to have a combi of HDD drivers that come from different suppliers. That might mean that it is not wise to get individual drivers from each manufacturer. Beter to go to mobo manufacturer and get the latest HDD drivers (and maybe chipset) for your specific mobo from there.

Thanks for checking this out again. It's interesting stuff - Max.exe is actually the software Max/msp:

Max « Cycling 74

I use this all the time, so it's a bit disconcerting that it might be part of the problem.

However, I think the real problem is the HDD drivers, The motherboard I own (P8Z68-V PRO) has four 6gb Sata ports, 2 of them are Intel chipset and the other 2 are Marvell. I've been using the OCZ SSD's on the Marvell ports, so maybe I should switch them to the Intel ones. After a quick search I see there are Bsod issues related to this all over the Asus forum pages, so it makes ense that that's the problem.

I'll do this, and try to fix the bluetooth issue (Perhaps I can re-install the drivers?) then see what happens.....

Thx for posting back... there are many Max.exe... yours gave a problem and I had to guess what the origin was... nvidia uses a max.exe, I had not counted on yours... You are right about the HDD being a higher prio problem. In fact if that is messed up, the logs could inadvertently claim any 'current executable"to be at fault whilst in truth it is the Hard disk (driver). Good luck on that and please post results...
