Okay, I dont know if this is the place to post this, because it has to do with a system with xp on it, but I figure you guys can help out anyways.

So, my mothers boyfriends computer is about 2 years old, and its got xp on it. It usually runs fine, and he doesnt use it for much besides low end programs and internet browsing via IE

Well, tonight he went afk, the computer went to sleep, and he got back and the system was running really slowly. He rebooted, and now it gets the bluescreen when windows is loading. Something ive also noted before, about the past couple months, is that his computer has been booting really slowly. (it takes ~five minutes from login to open and have a usable browser window open) interestingly enough, the bluescreen just flashes, and auto reboots the computer. Ive heard of this before, from my friends. Whether or not they are right about this, they said it had to do with a 'reboot on bluescreen' setting. I dont know, and im not sure if i should care, because...

We couldnt get it to boot in anything. safe mode, last safe config, regular w/e. So i tried installing w7 on it... but its really laggy. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the part where it asks you what language, and where you are, and it completly hangs up at the 'starting windows' screen shortly after clicking install.

I was just wondering, based on what ive said, can anybody advise me on what i should do? We would rather not have to buy a new computer for him, and the last place i ever want to go is to geeksqaud -.- (no offense to any geeksquad members)

Short version: computer bluescreen flashes and resets on OS boot up, is way too laggy for the system specs, (is 2 years old) and even freezes or doesnt load when installing a new operating system

Thanks in advance guys.

One way would be to do a clean install of win 7. that woould cure the problem (probably) and get him on a newer OS. Before you do go to MS and get the upgrade advisor to se if his computer can do it.

Thats what I tried. I attempted to install windows 7, and it freezes at install. The disk is brand new, no scratches or anything.

Trust me, i know that computer can run windows 7. It was slated to be given vista. (plus i cant get to the upgrade advisor. it hangs up, like when it tries to install) If THIS computer can run seven, that computer can, and that computers got... i dunno, a dual 3.0 processor, 2 gb ram, a good GPU, etc. Like i said, this isnt an issue of whether or not the system can run it or not, its... well i think it might be some hardware issue, somethings probly broken, i just wanna know whether or not you guys think differently.

Did you buy or download the win 7? You are booting from the dvd and installing from there, right?

You have a 3 gig usb stick? it would be faster and avoid the dvd player.

The dvd worked in another computer, right?

Where does it hang on install?

okay, well, it gets to the first part where it asks for location, and language, then you click next, then it says, install, or repair system. i click install, and then it goes to a 'starting windows' screen with the busy mouse pointer. this is where it hangs. I waited 30 minutes for it to get past it but it doesnt wanna do it. Also, i can get ahold of a 3gb usb stick.

off topic, but... windows 7 can fit on a 3gb stick?

Yes, but I don't know how to do that (the memtest is usually a linux distro, but I'm unsure of what your hard drive is and what kind of bootable OS that the hard drive manufacturer uses.
