BSOD on brand new pc!!

I haven't tried on the machine that this topic regards, but I've tried both via Windows Update and the 900MB installer from the download center, and both fail near the end, sometimes rebooting the PC. And now, each time the Windows Updater tries to automatically download and install the SP1 the whole comp grinds to a halt needing a reset in order to reboot, and sometimes causing it to freeze while Windows starts up :/
So I've just disabled the update for now, I'm going to make a proper backup and then try to update in the future, I might just reinstall on a new drive and I'm guessing the SP1 should install without problems on a fresh install anyways..

ontopic: after some extra research, I've found that many MSI motherboards when coupled with OCZ DDR3 memory banks typically have this 'random BSOD' problem, so I'm checking the OCZ forums for help.

Update:

The guys at OCZ Forums adviced me to update the BIOS (wich conveniently had a new version with a changelog of "improved memory compatibility") and gave me some settings to manually set the mobo to.

The system ran perfectly fine for 3 weeks and now, just now, BSOD out of ****ing nowhere.

So back to the drawing board it is..

Has the machine BSOD'd for you yet, or have they saved themselves for your friend still? If the latter, we might again pick up the line of reasoning shown in your post above.

The system does not seem like a real power-hog, using less than 400W by some hasty and rounded calculations; the 650W Cooler Master seems more than adequate under clean power conditions, but months of dirty power could cause the PSU to age prematurely.

When did you run those tests? If you haven't done it since the latest round of BSODs, give Memtest86 another go, see if anything new turns up.
