Hi all,

I bought a used Lenovo thinkpad t420. It has Intel HD 3000 graphics, no dedicated card. I dualboot Win7Pro64bit SP1 and Ubuntu, where I also get freezes time to time, but in different situations. Windows usually crash after 30-60 minutes of playing Mafia2, now it also happened while playing Stronghold, which is not so demanding game.

I updated all drivers using Lenovo System Update, updated BIOS, uninstalled Virtual Daemon and ran a malware remover I found elsewhere on this site in safe mode. I also ran memtest for several hours with no error.

As you can see from the dumps, I get many different errors.
It's worth noting that I had to install ThinkPadFanControl, because as deafult, the fan ran always at the same speed, even up to 90°C. Since fixing the fan, the freezes happen much less often, but still.

I attach dumps and logs, please let me know if there is anything else I can do.
I'm worried it is a HW fault, maybe caused by overheating while in use by the previous owner. Anyway I'd like to try everything before giving it to the service.

Thanks guys.

Hello Andy.

Get rid of intel rapid storage.

  1. Right click on "my computer" icon and click "manage" on the context menu.
  2. It will open the "computer management" window.
  3. Select "Device Manager" in the left pane, It will list all the existing devices up.
  4. Expand "Disc Drives" by clicking on the triangle in front of it.
  5. Select one item under it, right click, uninstall.
  6. Continue the process for all items under "Disc Drives"
  7. Now restart the computer. At restart, windows will auto configure the appropriate system driver, msahci.sys.
Try an earlier version of Intel HD Graphics Driver. Sometimes the version that you are using is crash prone.

What is the temps of the system? Upload a screenshot of Speccy summery tab.

Hi,
temperature doesn't get over 80°C, so I think that's fine. I attached the screenshot I made after an hour of playing.

I also removed the disk drivers and no bsod in the hour. Will get back after thorough testing.

edit: Got bsod, gonna try downgrading the driver.

Temps are not fine at all .... and you need some additional cooling, for sure.

Clean your laptop's air vent of dust probably using a vaccum to suck it out

Use this hardware maintenance manual from Lenovo for your model as a reference.
