BSOD ony with the USB wireless adapter plugged in; powering down...

My problems started when I wanted to change from a wired connection, in my office, to wireless.

I have two other computers running wireless, with no issues.

I thought it would be super easy to plug in a USB card/lan, to make this happen. It was super easy on my other computer.

I purchased at Medialink USB adapter, due to the rave reviews on Amazon.

It seemed to install correctly and loaded the driver but I have to go to the Network and Sharing Center, in order to enable it.

I click on "change adapter settings" and on that page I try to enable the adapter but it will never enable.

Someone on Amazon reported the same problem, and said to do this in safe mode. I have tried that to no avail.

The interesting thing is that in Network and Sharing Center, a pop-up window says enabling and then shortly after it says enabled, but it does not show as being enabled on the screen.

However, when I go to device manager, it shows the USB adapter and the driver installed and the only option there is to disable it - which seems to imply that the adapter is already enabled???

Very confusing.

The bottom line though is that the adapter does not work and the software that they supply you with, does not show any networks in the area, even though the new ASUS router is within 10 feet of me, and works extremely well with the other computers in another room and a floor above me.

I got the blue screen of death, when I try to turn off my computer, with the USB adapter plugged in.

This has happened every time I try to turn off the computer.

The computer will immediately turn off as soon as I unplug the USB adapter and will not give the BSOD!

It also has an equal issue trying to start up, if the adapter is plugged in. It will not start until I unplug the adapter.

The BSOD says "driver power state failure" which would seem to indicate to me that there is a problem that the driver?? But I have to admit that I know nothing about this. I only know that the USB adapter does not work and causes a problem if it is plugged in.

I did call the manufacturer (Mediabridge), and they sent me another USB adapter (Medialink WirelessN WWN-USB150N), so that I know that it is not in effective adapter, more than likely.

I would really like to get my system wireless so that there isn't a wire running across the floor!!

The manufacturer told me that the only time that they have seen this problem (the adapter not enabling) was when an antivirus program was present.

However, they said they have not seen this issue with AVAST, which is what I use (the paid Internet security version).

Nonetheless, I contacted Avast and they sent me software to completely uninstall the program, without any trace left.

I tried reinstalling the adapter and tried to enable it again, but it did not work and so I feel that the antivirus program is not the issue here...

Hi ARC!

I did Uninstall AVAST using Avast uninstaller.

So that can't be the issue anymore, can it?

You told him that he had an old driver, and it seemed to resolve this problem.

He was using the exact same adapter as I am.

When I go to device manager and try to update the driver, it says that the most recent driver is already installed!? But I see that the driver is from 2009? The new driver seems to be from 2012? I don't get it...

It doesn't appear that he had the same problem as me; only a BSOD several times a week - not every time that I tried to shut down with the adapter installed.

Interestingly, I also have Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit too, just like him...

Is that what I should use?

I only got the BSOD when I tried to shut down the computer and the adapter was plugged in. It would never shut down but eventually gave the BSOD.

It also had an equal problem trying to start up; not starting until I remove the adapter.

An equally big problem, is that I can never get the adapter to enable! Do you have that problem ever?

At least that is what it says in the "Network and Sharing Center" when I tried to enable the adapter, a small pop-up window says that it is enabling, then almost immediately says that it is enabled, yet it still does not work or show any local networks, even though my router is only 5 feet away.

When I go to device manager, the only option I have is to disable the adapter, which seems to imply that the adapter is already enabled. But alas, it is still not working. It causes a problem shutting down and starting up my computer and gives the dreaded BSOD.

Hoping that updating the driver will fix the problem!!

The driver on my system appears to be from 2009??

Any thoughts on this?

Should I just scrap this adapter and purchase another model/brand?

I really would like to go wireless; everything else in my house is!

I have spent about five hours already on this. Tech support basically said it was my problem!

Ben, if you like, you may uninstall the network adapter driver in device manager and install the latest, downloaded one.

But, as far as I have seen, your issue was not related with that one, particularly.

Have you done the other things those I suggested? If so, is it crashing after those too?
Then you upload the latest dumps.

OK, I tried that. The adapter will not uninstall with the adapter plugged in. I believe that the manufacturer says to uninstall it with the adapter plugged in but they say that when using their software.

It would never finish uninstalling with it plugged in - but as soon as I unplugged it, it appeared to be uninstalled because it disappeared from the list!

I can't tell if it uninstalled it or not!

The driver file I downloaded is an executable file. So do I do this next?

Then do I plug in the adapter? But then it will install the driver again? Overwriting the driver I just installed?

A little lost here... OR will it see a driver already there and NOT try to reinstall one?

I want to stop doing this over and over and want to get it right! )

BTW, I am now using Microsoft Security Essentials. Avast is gone for now,

I installed SP1 and no BSOD last night and even though shutdown was a little slow, it did it!

BUT the adapter will still not enable, so I an trying the new driver.

As the downloaded driver is an executed one, you execute it at first, it will be installed. Then plug in the adapter, it should work fine.

Do it, and let us know how the computer is running after all those.

Hi again!

I did follow your instructions and uninstalled the driver.


I ran the executable file and it's installed the driver.


I plugged the adapter in and a pop-up window said that the driver was installing, but it stopped almost immediately.


I checked the device manager and the adapter was there with the 2012 version of the driver. Great!


However, the pop-up window came back and said that it was Not installed successfully.


It is NOT showing in Network and Sharing until I unplug it and then I just get a brief glimpse of it, as it flashes on the screen and it shows that it is disabled, as usual.


As before, when I go to device manager and right click it, it shows the option to disable it, which seems to imply that it is already enabled!


Exact same problem as before...

I am at my wits end!


I was going to shut my computer down now, with the adapter plugged in, and see if I got the BSOD but what is the point?


Maybe it's time to chuck this adapter and get a PCI card...

The manufacturer says that the only thing that will stop the adapter from enabling is an antivirus program, but remember, I uninstalled avast and am now using the Microsoft version.


Could that be the problem? The manufacturer seemed to imply that only aftermarket antivirus programs cause a problem... But not sure about that.



BTW, I did a search for netr28ux.sys and could not find it.


I could not even find the drivers folder in Windows. Maybe it is hidden?
