Solved BSOD playing Smite, BCC116 & BCC117, BSOD mentions atikmpag.sys

Around the 17th of March I was playing Smite, joined a match and about half way through it, I received a freeze then a BSOD. This continued to happen randomly when I would play a smite match, ranging from every 1 to 6 matches, could happen near the beginning or in the middle of the game. So I wouldn't ruin more games for others I attempted to fix the problem myself, looking up that I had to update my GPU drivers (which I do now have) or uninstall them to let my pc auto install the suitable one (This ended up with my PC or Radeon hardware detector not detecting the GPU so I had to system restore). I also tried cleaning out my PC rig with a duster to see if, my bad PC hygiene, had caused heating problems but it had no affect. I have used malware-bytes to detect malware and viruses but all that was quarantined seems to have had no affect.

I tried these solutions that I see everywhere when I search, but obviously they didn't work. So instead of finding a solution I attempted to find more symptoms, I found that within the blue screen it mentions atikmpag.sys, I see that my PC problem reports tell me that I have a lot of Windows shutting down and Video hardware errors (With the BCC codes BCC116 and BCC117 respectivly). I also attempted to see if I would gain the BSOD by testing on more strenuous games and didn't gain any BSOD whilst playing Dark Souls 2 and Batman Arkham Knight, thus so far I have concluded that this BSOD seems Smite specific, though this could do with some further testing.

So now I have given up in attempting to fix it by my self and have joined the Sevenforums in an attempt to fix this problem and get back to the game I enjoy. I hope I have successfully attached the zip file correctly but if I haven't or some other files are needed, or if I haven't applied a forum rule by accident please mention it. To test whether a solution has worked or not I will have to play many smite matches so it may take a while before whether I can reply/confirm whether the BSODs are gone or not.

Hello Xeno and welcome to 7forums!

I looked at the dumps and the VIDEO_TDR_ ERROR bug check has a value of 0x00000116. This indicates that an attempt to reset the display driver and recover from a timeout failed.

I would recommend that you reboot into safe mode and uninstall the graphics card driver using DDU which you can download from here:
Display Driver Uninstaller Download version 15.7.5.3

Ok, so I used the DDU to uninstall the driver in safe mode. I did still notice that it did not automatically reinstall the driver when I restarted, it didn't seem to detect my GPU, so I got AMD to auto detect the card and install the driver. I do hope it was just this simple trick to get rid of the BSODs, I am now going to get a substantial amount matches done in attempt to see if it has worked. I will send another thanking reply and mark the thread as solved if I gain a positive outcome.

Bad new Boris ,

During the first test match it BSOD'd about 10 mins in. Seemed like the same BSOD with the BCC 116 code and the blue screen mentioning atikmpag.sys

What else can you suggest?

Ok I have updated my motherboard info. Whilst I am receiving help from you Boris and this forum, I am also going to try and contact someone in the smite forums as they may also be able to help my smite specific problem. I will still be checking here though to try out fixes and keep updating the status.

Can you please post the latest log? Also run Furmark, if your temps goes too high stop the test.

Here is the most recent log along with the previous ones, I don't know how to separate them. I also ran Furmark for 25 mins (longer than the average match time) and the max temp was 66 degrees. You can check in the jpeg image I have attached.

From what I have just researched that sort of temperature is not bad and supports the testing I have done on more strenuous games, thus once again making this seems smite specific.

How often have you installed updates for your system?

If you haven't in a while I would recommend you download and install the chipset drivers and there would also be a BIOS update:

Every dump is blaming your GPU, check Speccy to see if your overheating.

POSSIBLE half way SOLUTION

After so extensive testing I may have found a half measure to counter this annoying error that only seems to affect smite. I found it whilst trying to test my temps whilst playing and I would have to use windowed mode to keep track of Speccy. I played many games to get an idea if my GPU was overheating but to my bewilderment I didn't receive a single BSOD (very odd ). After switching from full screen to windowed back and forth I do believe it seems to counter the problem. Whilst this is a half measure it is something I can deal with. Though if it is going full screen is causing the problem, I do still wonder what I could do to fix it :sarc:.

Regardless I shall continue play testing through out tomorrow when I can and when I have a substantial amount I will confirm whether I am correct or not by marking the thread as solved.

Now i don't know much about Smite, but a suggestion would be if the game has a "Fullscreen Windowed" option, enable that.

Nor do I play Smite but if you search for "smite crash in fullscreen" you'll get loads of pages with a problem when alt-tabbing the game. One solution to it was to enable Borderless Fullscreen, you can give it a shot.

Yup, Windowed Fullscreen/Borderless Fullscreen. I called it Windowed Fullscreen because i'm so used to CS:GO.
