I cannot find any solutions to similar problems on the internet. I replaced a broken lcd screen with a new lcd of the same brand for netbook Asus EeePC 1001P. As soon as I install Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 I received BSOD. BSOD occurs soon after desktop starts to load. I do not not think it's a hardware problem (i.e. motherboard or graphics card), because there are no problems with screen display at full 1024x600 resolution on a freshly installed XP or Mint linux on the same netbook. I've tried the most current Intel drivers and earlier versions, but they all cause BSOD. I've tried disabling most of the other hardware, but have yet to find any that maybe causing conflict with the graphics driver. Dump file say the cause of BSOD is monitor.sys. I've even tried replacing monitor.sys from a working Windows 7, but same error occurs on the netbook. I've attached the SF Diagnostic Tools logs. Thank you for your time. I eagerly await your suggestions.

Hi,
Your crashes were caused by the generic monitor.sys which Windows loads for your monitor, and it seems to be related to the brightness calculation causing a EXCEPTION_DIVIDED_BY_ZERO fault.

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)

STOP 0x0000007F: UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Usual causes: Memory corruption, Hardware (memory in particular), Overclocking failure, Installing a faulty or mismatched hardware (especially memory) or a failure after installing it, 3rd party firewall, Device drivers, SCSI/network/BIOS updates needed, Improperly seated cards, Incompatible storage devices, Overclocking, Virus scanner, Backup tool, Bad motherboard, Missing Service Pack

I would suggest uninstalling AVG and as an alternative:

Microsoft Security Essentials.

Recommended from a strict BSOD perspective, compatibility & stability
compared to other antiviruses/internet security software.

:ar: Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

   Note
Once downloaded, update and run a full system scan

Super hybrid engine is an overclocking software for Atom CPU's, this maybe causing
issues with your display, try updating to the latest version and then re-install the Intel drivers?

If updating Super Hybrid Engine/reinstalling Intel drivers does not work then:

Take memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.

:ar: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html

   Tip
Run these tests overnight

Post back any results.

Cheers
Dave

Dave,

Thank you for your suggestions. They are very helpful. The funny thing is, MS Security Essential is the antivirus currently installed and AVG isn't. Perhaps some remnants of past AVG is still present. I'm going use AVG remover utility to ensure that everything AVG is gone Also, I've tried removing Super Hyper Engine before and it didn't solve the problem so I reinstalled it back with the latest version. I think I'll go ahead and remove that as well for the time being. Like I said, BSOD was occuring even on a freshly installed Windows 7 with no additional drivers and software installed. As soon as I installed the Intel driver, it caused BSOD. And graphics is fine on XP and linux...no problem with full resolution. Something is happening with Win7. I will report back after trying your suggestions one by one. In the meantime, I have a question. If the generic monitor.sys is causing the crash due to the brightness calculations, isn't there a way to just change that line of code in monitor.sys? Just curious.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

Was Windows XP the original O/S of the machine? As upgrading from XP to Win 7 can cause
driver issues, especially graphics. I installed Win 7 onto my mothers Asus eeePC 901 and had issues
with the graphics, the issue was that I had upgraded the BIOS which it did not like, so I had to
re-flash the BIOS with an earlier version, (I think it was Chipset issues), then I managed to get the
correct graphics drivers (Vista ones i think).

Also I see the driver you have installed from your msinfo32 file is:

Code:
IntelIntel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
Version: [COLOR=black][B]8.14.10.1972[/B][/COLOR]
Dated: 10/15/[COLOR=red]2009[/COLOR]

If you havent already try this later driver:

Version: 15.12.75.50.7.2230
Dated: 10/20/2010

Windows 7 Starter was the origianl os. I installed XP and Mint OS on a fresh partition to see if I get the same problem, but they both worked fine. It was a way to elimate that it was a hardware problem. I've tried updating the BIOS as well, but to no avail. The issue was occuring on the old BIOS as well as the updated BIOS. I've updated the Chipset to the latest as well. Funny, that u suggested the older vista driver, I think I've tried that too. I'll try again. Is there a way to tweak the monitor.sys? Completely removing AVG didn't work. Keep u posted...

Hi,

I would say if everything runs fine with XP/mint installed then as you say it is unlikely to be hardware issues.

I will ask for assistance with the monitor.sys issue, as monitor.sys is a protected system file,
it probably wont be directly causing issues rather something related, and once that is
sorted i believe it will stop your BSOD's.

It maybe wise to run SFC to check the integrity of all Windows 7 system files:
  • Click on Start > Type in search cmd
Right-click cmd after results are displayed and Run as Administrator
Type SFC /scannow at the prompt
(Note: There is a space between SFC and /scannow)
:ar: SFC Tutorial

   Note
Select option two. If any problems are found, run the scan 3 times and immediately
reboot the computer after each scan.

Cheers

In addition, I have asked another member about monitor.sys and he suggested
that you may have more than one Intel driver installed.

After looking in your msinfo32 file, under "Problem Devices", it indeed shows that
2 different drivers/devices are present?

I would suggest to uninstall both devices in Device Manager, reboot and install the driver
I suggested in post #4

Dave,

As far as two graphics drivers showing up in device manager, that also happens in XP, but with no problems. I think that happens, because there are two processors (I could be wrong, but doesn't the graphics run off the processor memory on these netbooks?). I've tried uninstalling both graphics many times, even disabling one and keeping one enabled, but no go. I ran SFC before with no file corruptions, but this time around it does say some files could not be fixed or is missing. I'm gonna have to try and find and replace those files just in case. This is a tough one. But we will get to the bottom of this I tell ya!

Hi,

If you found errors with SFC, then run 2 more times rebooting inbetween.
If you are unable to repair the SFC errors let me know.

I believe the solution to this issue is driver related...have you installed the 2010 driver i suggested? Same issue?

cheers

Dave, as far as I can tell from the SFC log the few files that are corrupt or missing are related to Net framework. I even tried uninstalling Net framework 4 and kept Net framework 3.5.1, which comes native with Win7 Starter, but it was no solution. I'm attaching the log file to see if you can make sense of what might be missing. Thanks.

Hi,

I have asked Tom982 to assist with your Update and SFC issues, you will be in good hands :)

For your issue of uninstalling programs, try:

Revo Uninstaller
Download and install Revo Uninstaller free from here: Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Opt for "Advanced Mode" and uninstall the software (also delete the leftover registry entries).

Did you update the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 driver (2010) as you did not say?

cheers

Hi NeoJediX,

This should sort out your SFC problem :)

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a files should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.

  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hi,

There will be a solution, but you need to follow and post back the outcome of what is suggested in the thread
in order for us to eliminate causes, have you updated the Intel driver yet to 2010?

Also can you please post the info Tom requires in order to help with your issue.

Thanks

Dave,

1. I have installed the driver that you recommended and is still the one installed (and still BSOD).
2. I was having more issues uninstalling windows updates/patches than programs. I uninstalled SP1 (still BSOD) then reinstalled SP1.
3. I was getting syntax command error with
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
so I just went into Windows>Logs>CBS>cbs.log and grabbed it from there.

Here are the two logs (not sure if I did the code thing correctly). I'm attaching the cbs.log separately, because it's rather long.

Ahhh....Good work and thanks for the logs, Tom will post up a fix for your update issues.

In the meantime, please post up the new crash dumps and I will take a look and see if there is anything pointing to your latest BSOD'S. (Please ensure SP1 is installed first)

cheers

Dave

Just looked back through your older logs and I noted you have a few programs installed, that could be causing issues, that should be removed:

I would uninstall Registrar Registry Manager, Windows 7 does not need such tools and
they usually cause more harm than good.

Also remove PowerISO from your system as the driver pre-dates Windows 7 (SCDEmu.SYS 2008)

Cheers

Dave
