BSOD - usually whilst playing Dishonoured

Hi all,

Playing Dishonoured has been causing my comp to BSOD every 40 mins or so. Temps seem fine but I thought it could be a PSU problem (it's the no-name one that came with the case).

It BSOD this morning whilst Dishonoured was running but minimised, which is weird because the GPU wasn't working hard and CPU was at about 47%.

So anyway, I was hoping that some altruistic soul could check my crashdumps and make sure it's not a driver issue, before I shell out for a new PSU :D

Thanks!

Hello fraktal and welcome to the forums

What AMD GPU do you have? If you know how to do so, please update your drivers.

Thanks. It's an HD5770. I was just thinking to myself it would probably be a good first step to update the drivers...and then I refreshed the page :D

Are you recommending this based on the crashdumps, or just as a general first step?

Updated crashdump and other files (although I don't think they should have changed much, I haven't had any new crashes).

I'll have a look into your suggestions, Golden. Thanks.

OK, I've read those links. I'll run a memtest overnight tonight; in the meantime I've updated Catalyst and I'll look into updating any other drivers. I'll post again tomorrow with results.

Hi again,

I did 10 passes of memtest without any errors. I also updated my Catalyst drivers. I'm still getting the same crashes :(

Any more ideas? Thanks.

Well, I thought the next viable option was to reinstall windows. However, my comp BSOD'd during the non-windows part of the installation procedure..which to my mind pretty much rules out the software side of the equation.

Is there any way to rule out exactly what's causing the issue?

Thanks.

Exactly the same thing is happening to me, on a radeon 6850hd, intel i5 2500k. did you work out the problem?

Yes - it was just the CPU overheating. For some reason Dishonoured stressed it in a way that other games hadn't. I replaced the CPU cooler with a bigger one, which made a difference, and also set up SpeedFan to alert me with a noise when I was within a few degrees of the temperature that seemed to cause crashes, so I could alt-tab out of the game. Not ideal - and when I have the time and funds I'll rebuild with a bigger focus on airflow - but it allowed me to finish the game.

Good luck!
