BSOD when laptop sitting idle

Hi,
The laptop is an Acer Aspire 5741 with 3GB memory running Windows 7 64bit with all updates.
The laptop often shows BSOD after it has been sitting idle for maybe half an hour or so, and is happening about once a day. Sometimes it will crash as soon as it boots up.

I have tried the following:
Run CHKDSK......No errors
Run Memtest 64+.... This occasionally shows one error always at the same address and displays Good ffffffff Bad fffff7f However I have run mdsched.exe many times and this shows no errors.

I have removed the Windows August updates and finally in desperation performed a Win 7 re-install from an ISO disk running it as an upgrade, Still I have the same problem.

I have attached the minidump zip file and wondered if this would give a clue as to whether or not it may be to do with the memory.

Hi Norwichman.

Test you HDD using HGST Windows Drive Fitness Test (WinDFT).

Let us know the result.

Thanks.
Couldn't get HGST to detect drive. I downloaded Seagate Sea Tools and ran that a couple of times but no errors detected. Will try a longer run tomorrow

If you use seatools, take both the Short Generic and Long Generic tests.

But it is a question that why HGST will not detect a Hitachi HDD! :sarc:

Thanks Arc.

I ran a short generic and no errors reported. So I ran a long generic and after a couple of minutes it reports a fail.

I'll start it again and let it run to the end (several hours I believe). We'll see what happens then but it looks as if we are on the right track.

Your HDD is Hitachi Travelstar 5K500.B 320GB. I still wonder why WinDFT failed to detect it.

Seatools is the best in the industry, it tests all the brands, its report is fully reliable, all right. But it is better to test the HDD using its manufacturer's own tool at first.

Hi.

I ran the the long generic and it did say that there were errors! I am running CHKDSK c: /R which is currently at 90%. (I am sending this from a different PC)

It displays:
Windows replaced bad clusters in file 258568 of name \PROGRAM~2\Corel\CORELP~1\commands\CmdBase1.dll

Maybe this is the problem ???

OK, Final result. from CHKDSK

Adding one bad cluster to the bad cluster file
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap
Windows has made corrections to the file system
Blah blah
Blah blah
4 KB in bad sectors
Etc
Etc
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50

I have just run Sea Tools long generic again and it still showed an error but running CHKDSK via recovery disk, didn't.

Not sure where to go from here, I'll just run the laptop normally for a few days and see what happens. Meantime, thanks a million for your help Arc.

CmdBase1.dll is an element of Corel PaintShop ...

We know that there is/are error/s with the HDD, but not sure if only this one is the error/s

If chkdsk can recover it, then it is good. Time will tell you the truth.

Seatools is more authentic than chkdsk.

IMHO you should plan to back up your data and get a new HDD, as soon as possible.
