Problem started out of the blue. Blew out dust, swapped out to known good RAM, eventually reformatted HD and reinstalled Windows. Problem persists, which leads me to believe it's hardware related. I've tried using WinDbg but don't think I'm doing it right. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Error code: 0x0000008E

The only thing I can say for certain here is you have a antique driver running your Ethernet I'm surprised it even works.

Just for an experiment try disabling the Ethernet device before starting the app to see if it prevents the crash. I would also snooze any antivirus programs you might have running in case they are interfering with the starting of services the application needs to function properly.

The actually crash is occurring in the classpnp.sys system file. This does lead me to believe a bad driver for a peripheral device is in play though.

If you have any reason to believe your copy of windows might be compromised trying this is easy and not very time consuming.

Maguscreed, thanks. I tried disabling the network adapter, no change. I just reinstalled Windows today so I don't think it's compromised but I will run the SFC command as recommended. Any other ideas?

honestly I would like to find a newer driver for you, but there doesn't appear to be one SiS ethernet cards/chips are kind of a rarity now.

Maguscreed,

sfc /scannow message: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

The system is pretty old, but that driver and the system have been working fine since January (OS upgrade).

oh you used a upgrade?
Did you do a clean install with it or just use the upgrade feature?
I have seen upgraded systems suffer from odd issues before.
You can do a clean install from a upgrade disc, there is a tutorial here on it.

That being said I'm going to see if I can get one of the other debuggers here to have a look for you. Sometimes a extra set of eyes helps.

Yes, I did a clean install. No, I did not use an upgrade. I should have said that I installed the OS in January and have had no problems since. Thanks again for your help.
