Hi there,

My computer BSOD today while playing Skyrim. If it's possible I would like to know what caused it and how I can prevent it from happening again.

I also got a BSOD on the 6th although I cannot remember what I was doing when it happened. Any help with that would also be appreciated.

Please view System Spec on my profile for system information. [Edit: just noticed there's a little drop down arrow at the bottom left of this post... you can tell I'm new around here haha]

Thanks :D

Crashes are inconclusive as to what the cause is

Code:

Remove AMD Overdrive. It is known to cause problems

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center.
Please uninstall the AMD OverDrive program as it can cause BSOD's on your system.
If it's the stand-alone app, uninstall it via Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program
If it's in the AMD VISION Engine Control Center, you can uninstall it using the AMD uninstall tool (or uninstall the entire AMD VISION Engine Control Center application through Control Panel

If the device remains a problem in perfmon /report, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Uninstall". Reboot for changes to take affect.

Thanks for the help mgorman87. I'll uninstall AMD Overdrive, however I cannot update my sound card drivers as I have the latest version... there is a newer version but it is in Beta and since I have previously had issues with it I do not want to install it. I will have to make do with Creative's drivers from June 2010.

Also do you really think it is worth updating my Realtek drivers? I have disabled my motherboards onboard audio (Realtek HD) in the BIOS. I want to keep my system free from unnecessary drivers so I would only install newer realtek drivers if it did have some sort of benefit...

Thanks for helping me with this.

Hi again,

Since un-installing AODDriver and updating my network drivers I have still received a couple of BSODs.

However they never completed dumping the info onto my hard drive and got stuck at something like 35% or the dump didn't start at all.

The only info I got from them was:

1)
SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

Technical info: ***STOP: 0x0000003B (0x00000000C0000005, 0xFFFFFA8006A0A278, 0xFFFFF880078A0E30, 0x0000000000000000)

Dumping physical memory to disk: 35 (stuck at this/frozen).

and
2)
0x0000001E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF80002DD44E2, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF)

- no other information apart from the generic message of "If this is the first time you've seen this stop error"... etc etc.

Another note is that when my PC got a BSOD the audio would be an odd loop of sound of about a 0.1 second section of sound, creating a harsh fuzzing sound.

I have attached another system health report that I just ran.

I don't know if anything can be found out from just the error numbers, but any help really is appreciated.

Thanks !

P.S. Please note in my previous post that I said "However they never completed dumping the info onto my hard drive and got stuck at something like 35% or the dump didn't start at all." so the jcgriff will only contain the 2 minidumps that have been previously included, as there are no new ones.

Could you please tell me how to uninstall AODDriver2.sys as what I've done obviously didn't work.

How I uninstalled:

Device manager > View: Show hidden devices > Right click on AODDdriver > Uninstall > restarted PC. I then went back to device manager to make sure it wasn't listed there and it wasn't and still isn't.

The method of "If it's in the AMD VISION Engine Control Center, you can uninstall it using the AMD uninstall tool" Doesn't work as AMD install manager (Which is what I am assuming the uninstall tool is as I can't find a dedicated AMD uninstall tool from my google searches) doesn't list AODDriver or any sort of overdrive tool as installed.

What is the best thing to do?

I did update my realtek drivers, but i'll do it again as something obviously didn't work the first time. FYI I downloaded and installed "Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Auto Installation Program (SID:1483418)" From the link you provided.

Make sure it is removed from Program and Features. If it isn't there then run MSCONFIG and disable it from starting.

AODDriver2.sys was located in C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Fuel\amd64 so I disabled AMD FUEL Service in MSCONFIG under services as that was the only thing I could find related to AODDriver2.sys in MSCONFIG. I have also deleted AODDriver2.sys off my hard drive, I don't know if that was stupid of me but after a couple of restarts and some gaming I haven't run into any problems.

The only AMD program that was/is in my Programs and Features is AMD Catalyst Install Manager.

I re downloaded the realtek drivers and ran a repair.

I have also run another jcgriff and system report:

View attachment 198082

I'll run the hardware tests over the next couple of days and report back here with my results when they're done.

Again I thank you for helping me with this as I can't find a solution anywhere else.

Update:

I ran memtest for 7 passes and got 0 errors.

In Prime95 I ran Small FFTs for 4 hours, 0 errors and 0 warnings on all 4 cores.
Large FFTs 4 hours, 0 errors and 0 warnings on all 4 cores.
Blend for 14 hours, 0 errors and 0 warnings on all 4 cores.
Max temperature on all 4 cores was 59C (132F).

However after removing/deleting AODDriver2.sys my PC hasn't crashed at all! I have run multiple games for a few hours and Skyrim past the point it would usually crash several times. So for the moment I think AODDriver2.sys was the cause of the problem!

Thanks for all your help and I'll now mark this thread as solved. Let's hope it stays like that :D
