Solved BSOD with FX1600M Win 7 on startup with ac power.

Have Compaq 8710W Mobile Workstation with FX1600M Graphics card. Upgraded to Win 7 Pro. but now does not start with AC power supply.(BSoD). If AC supply is removed, startup is OK by battery only and then AC supply can be plugged in. Runs perfectly until Start/Restart then BSoD unless AC is unplugged. HP have suggested NVidia drivers which make no difference. Anyone help?

Hi Faladu and thank you for your prompt reply....error code is 0x0000116. I am using HP`s recommended MS graphics driver 188.64, at the moment.
I have tried the latest NVidia drivers with the same result. If AC power is plugged in, start-up gets to the Windows splash screen, then a quick `Welcome` then BSoD. As soon as it auto restarts, I pull out the AC power, click `Start Windows Normally` and start-up is fine. Once started, plug in AC and it runs perfectly, all day. I thought it may be the AC power supply (90W) so I bought an 120W supply, no different! Put extra Ram in and have re-seated both Memory cards (1Mb. plus 2Mb.) I have tried removing all Nvidia content and allowed laptop to install a ` generic VGA grahics controller`. This cures the problem and all goes well, but with a very poor display and dull, slow graphics.
Most annoying!.......hope you can help....Dick.

Hello, again, Faladu.......Just installed the old XP driver (176.87), with some installation problems, but it
now starts up normally! There is no NVidia Desktop Manager, though. Should I now leave well alone?...Dick

If you are satisfied with the way your system is running, I'd leave it the way it is ... If it aint broke, dont fix it!

Yes, if it aint broke now, don't give it opportunities unnecessarily!

Older hardware won't get much help on 'new' drivers any way usually and support of them vanishes after a while, so it can do more harm then good.
