No, not both key presses. Use one or the other. You can also press DEL and enter the BIOS one time boot menu and select what you want, save and exit.

I know it isn't both, I tried both seperately and I can enter the bios to place the usb first in boot order using delete, I've been able to do that from the beginning. The problem is that for some reason it doesn't seem to matter, after I save and restart, windows simply opens and after checking the bios again, the main hdd is in first place again. I'll try it on a different flash drive or temporarily unplug the hdd next.

Just a thought, in this snip I have a hp USB attached to a USB 2.0 port. It also shows as UEFI hp. If you choose the UEFI boot it will go direct to w7 instead of booting the USB drive. Also connect to a USB 2.0 port.

Yeah I got it to work, running right now on the computer. Thanks for telling me to put it in a usb 2.0; it still showed up only as a uefi but when I used the boot menu at the bottom (which i never saw????), and sorry for the late response I was on a vacation.

I ran the test but then after coming back around 3 hours later the computer was at the windows login screen... I'm so lost at this point, what even happened? Because of it returning to the login screen I couldn't determine the results, but there were no bluescreens logged so I'm clueless as to what actually happened. If anyone could get back to me with what I should do at this point it would be very appreciated.

It appears that something caused a system reboot. Could be just a hiccup in the power lines around your home or something more serious in your hardware.

Can you try running memtest again?

If you run Windows Memory Diagnostic instead my mistake, it defaults to run two passes and reboot.

I wasn't running windows memory diagnostic, I ran memtest from this site Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool. Or maybe I'm just misinterpreting what you're saying Britton. I will try the test again to see if the same results occur, but I fear that the problem the whole time was the motherboard since we've ruled out the hard drive and processor, and the passes that memtest did on the memory were fine when I left (still only 1-2 passes though). I'll run it again later on.

The specs on my page are wrong because i built the computer for a friend, and he does have haswell, but on the newegg page it says haswell compatible, I'll pull it up again and find a link to assure you.

Ran memtest again and it went through correctly. 16 passes and 0 errors so I suppose it is the motherboard. We ran multiple tests on the hard drive, RAM, and CPU, the only possible answer is to replace the motherboard; unless the problem is the graphics card, which I seriously doubt. If there is a way to test this, can someone send me a link or give a further suggestion other than to ship the motherboard back to asus and reassemble practically the entire computer?

Also, can the processor from the current motherboard be taken out and reinserted to the new one? or do we have to ship that back for a replacement as well?

Ran furmark until it was done and a little bit past with a max temp of 78 degrees, no artifacts or crashes so that rules out the graphics card as well. Filed an RMA report on the asus site because it has been over a month since we bought it from newegg and thus it can't be RMA'd to there. The only problem now is that i built it for my friend that lives about 300 miles away and I can't fix his computer for him so he'll either have to learn how to remove and reinsert the motherboard and all of the components, (subtract the psu, hdd, and dvd-rom drive). Any suggestions, I know bestbuy costs ridiculous amounts and i want him to learn, but if he can't do it, is there anywhere else it could be taken?

Swapping out a board isn't a job for a novice. The CPU removal and replacing is like a whole list of steps. Taking RAM out, the retention clip on GPU, often forgotten, replacing the CPU socket cover.

As the builder you should perhaps have him bring it to you or go get it. Work on it until it works OK.

Ask them if they accept the RMA even if you use a piece of cardboard to cover the socket.
As long as it isn't conductive and is decently resistant to impact it should be fine in theory.
