Hello,

This one is really bugging me because I have checked everything, and I cannot fathom out what is causing the disconnection apart from, either is a MB issue or driver issue...?

Whenever, I turn on my computer and Windows loads it will not load the USB External HDD which has been set to AUTO so it will load when Windows loads. I have tried manual switch but this does not work either. The HDD is a combo HDD with Firewire and USB 2.x although, if I use Firewire instead its fine...?

What is happening is that Device Manager in disabling the device for some reason, and the only way in which I can get Device Manager to recognise the "EXT HDD" is to search for new hardware and then it works...?

The only thing that I found to be a little odd was there is no set power showing for the USB Mass Storage Device 0 mA I know it is the right port location because it is the same number.

Any ideas why this has started to do this...? Any suggestion would be deeply appreciated.

There is something I forgot to mention and that is the battery needs replacing. I have never had a battery die on me on a motherboard ever. The only conclusion I can think for the reason why the battery has been drained in the ROC Logo on the MB I used to leave on and I think it drained the motherboard battery. If the power is terminated, example the PSU is turned off then I have to reset the BIOS. Although, I don't think this is related but I thought I would mention it.

It wouldn't hurt to pick up and install a new battery.

You should also take a look and try to find the USB drivers for your motherboard (or just the motherboard drivers), as it sounds like it isn't recognizing it properly. Also make sure that Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.

Yep picking one up this week from PC World. I been custom building my own PC for over 10 years now and I have never come across a motherboard that the battery has gone dead ever. I think it was because there are lights on the MB which when turned off are powered by the battery and this has caused the battery to go dead. you can turn the lights off within the BIOS. But it looks pretty in the dark... OMG what a lame excuse I should be ashamed of myself.

Intel Chipset Drivers is installed and the latest drivers, although... am I correct in saying... W7 installs drivers for USB itself before you install Intel Chipset Drivers. Also if this was a driver issue wouldn't it be the same problem when the HDD was set from Auto to on position...? FireWire works fine no problems "ON/USB" works fine no problems, there is an intermittent problem with USB. No other hardware attached has any problems with USB only the HDD.

There are three settings | AUTO/USB | OFF | ON/USB/FireWire |

USB devices connected:
Monitor/Webcam/Wacom Tablet/Pen

USB devices connected to MB
Monitor (as above)
USB Receiver (keyboard and mouse)
Steering Wheel
Biometric scanner

At any given time there are 6 connected, which is within the recommended connected USB devices, although these days I don't think it matters how many are connected. Oops I forget connected to the MB via chassis there is another two USB which are not used all the time.
