Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

How to Enable or Disable the Built-in Elevated Administrator Account in Windows 7

   Information
This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable the built-in elevated Administrator account in Windows 7.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the options in this tutorial.

   Note
Standard user (Users) - The standard account is an unelevated restricted users account. It can help protect your computer by preventing users from making changes that affect everyone who uses the computer, such as deleting files that are required for the computer to work. It is recommend to create a standard account for each user instead of an administrator account for the user. When you are logged on to Windows with a standard account, you can do almost anything that you can do with an administrator account, but if a standard user wanted to do something that requires elevated rights that affects other users of the computer, such as installing software or changing security settings, Windows will give the standard user a UAC prompt to enter the password of an administrator account for approval and confirmation before allowing the action.

administrator user - Is an unelevated administrator account that is created by default during the installation of Windows 7, or is already setup or you on a OEM (ex: Dell) computer. An administrator account has complete access to the computer, and can make any desired changes. To help make the computer more secure, this administrator account type will be prompted by UAC by default to give confirmation before allowed to make any changes that require elevated administrator rights. Such as those that affect the system, other users, or when running anything elevated (Run as Administrator) since running elevated will allow it to have access to the entire computer.

Built-in "Administrator" - Is the hidden elevated administrator account that has full unrestricted access rights and permission on the computer. By default, this elevated "Administrator" account is not prompted by UAC by default to provide confirmation before allowed to make any changes that require elevated administrator permissions since it is an elevated account.

   Warning
If you enable the built-in Administrator account, then it is recommended to create a password for better security.

For additional security purposes, it is also not recommended to leave the built-in Administrator account always enabled, or to use it for everyday purposes.

hey guys a quick question..by enabling the admin account i should copy all my files and programs there so to get away from manually having to run each program as administrator and not use my normal account anymore?

Hello RaviR.

It's not really a good idea to use the Administrator account for everyday business because it's the last line of defense if any malware finds its way into the system, in this account malware would have free access to the entire system with no warning to you.
If you want to use programs/apps without a UAC prompt have a look at the tutorial at the link below.

Take a look at Option two step 1. Open a elevated command prompt.

At my Windows 7 logon screen, there appear two icons. One is labeled Adminsitrator, the other is labeled with my name. I have been told that it is not a good idea to have the Administrator icon at the logon screen. I tried unsuccessfully to remove it this way:

1) I followed the instructions at
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html and opened an elevated command prompt showing c:\windows\system32, and then

2) at http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html, I followed the instructions at Option Two "Through a Elevated Command Prompt". item 3, and in the "elevated command prompt" I typed "net user administrator/active:no" and pressed ENTER.

But the Administrator icon remains.

What am I doing wrong? Have I completely screwed up? Thanks for your help.

It occurs to me that perhaps the better thing for me to do is protect the Adminstrator icon with a password. Does that make sense?

Hello stefanmaine.

Did you enable that "Administrator" account? Before you do anything to that account just to make sure; download and install the free version of Malwarebytes virus scanner, once installed, run a complete scan of the entire PC, if it comes back with anything run it again until it comes clean.
Be sure to keep us informed.

As suggested, I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and ran a full scan twice. The first time came up with
Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{1d4db7d2-6ec9-47a3-bd87-1e41684e07bb} (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

and the second time, it found nothing.

Did you enable that "Administrator" account?

As instructed at "http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/783-elevated-command-prompt.html", in the Start Menu search box, I typed "cmd", then right clicked on cmd (at top), and clicked on "Run as administrator".

That opened the elevated command prompt at c:\windows\system32, where I typed "net user administrator /active:no" and pressed ENTER.

That brought up this response: "The user name could not be found"

The administrator icon remains displayed on the logon page.

This is the account I asked if you enabled, did you or did it "just show up" one day.

Re-start the PC and do another full scan.

This is the account I asked if you enabled, did you or did it "just show up" one day.

I apologize. I misunderstood your earlier question.

I did enable that administrator icon account. Here's what happened. When I first got this laptop with Windows 7, I needed to perform some action (I do not remember the details) which required "administrator privilege". I wasn't sure exactly what that meant, so at one of the forums (not this one -- I learned of this forum only later -- I wish now I had brought my question here first!), I asked about "administrator privilege", and was told to put the Administrator icon on the logon page, which I did. I think it involved a change to the Registry, but I may be incorrectly remembering that. The icon has been there ever since.

As suggested, this morning after restarting, I ran another full system scan by Malwarebytes, and it came up clean.

Thank you for your continued help.

Hello again stefanmaine.

What I suggest is for you to start a new thread at the security sub-forum here at Seven Forums and include all the pertinent info concerning the MBAM scans, as I'm at the limit of my expertise with this and someone over there will be of better help; have a look at the links below; sorry I couldn't be of more help, I'll keep an eye on the new thread.

Just a quick question... Why would you be able to log into disabled accounts through safe mode?

In safe mode, an administrator is always made available. If you have no administrator accounts, then the built-in account is made available, even if it is disabled. This is the only account that behaves in this manner.

Hi there!
Just a few question (as always :p )
I was pretty sure to be the administrator with all the permission on my PC because I''m the only users on my PC. But I've seen that often I need to "run as administrator" (right click) to have done something.
So did a search to understand this situation:

  • am I "THE" administrator when I have the only login access with my user name that is the ONLY user on this PC? As I can see it seems to me that I'm NOT "THE" administrator because I cannot install some program that needs the complete "power"
  • So I've tried to follow this tut and I've created an Administrator account but now I've doubled my problems :( First of all it seems that also when I login through the new icon Administrator (and not the old one LioSeven) I'm not with all the administrator privilege (as I still cannot install for example the LSS driver) and - overall - now I have 2 account but the Administrator one is without all my personalization, my plugins, programs and so on so for me is useless.
  • Now my question is: How can be sure to have all the administrator privilege in MY normal account (LioSeven) and how can totally eliminate the Administrator icon, account at logon?
I don't want to have to select every boot where I have to login but I need to have (when I really need) all the administrator account.
This PC is managed only by myself and it's a machine for my work, so sometimes I really need to do everything. I'm not a newbie on pc (I work on it from the first one I think 20 years ago ) and I'm very careful for all the security issue. For this reason I not only have the normal antivirus, firewall and malware software, but also an hardware firewall.
And for now :p no virus, no malware or other problems.
So please, can someone let me know when and how I can be the administrator on my PC with all the privilege.
Thanks a lot
Lio

Hello Lio,

When you log into the built-in Administrator account that you enabled in this tutorial, it will have full access along with anything you run while logged on to this account.

What does it tell you when you try to install the LSS driver?

Have you already tried to install this driver and the programs using compatibility mode in case it was some compatibility issue.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Thanks Shawn, you are always present for helping me :)
For the LSS problem I've open two 3D here in the forum but till now no solution and this problem really make me crazy.
And every new step I try, I create a new problem
I've tried to create a new user account (following this tut) named OverLio and passworded and no way to have the LSS driver installed (not enough privilege)
So I decided to remove this account and now I cannot do that because I don't have the "delete account option" (maybe from this account LioSeven my "privilege" are not enough. I can change the pass, the account name but I cannot remove it.
So I'm trying to enter in that account by clicking with Shift right click on the install LSS and then choose "Run as different user", put the user name and pass for the account OverLio but no way to do that: "Logon failure: Unknown user name or bad password" but they are the right ones
So the only think I want now is to remove this account (with administrator privilege) and try to switch on my own account LioSeven on the Administrator access not as the standard user.
But I'm really afraid to have other problems :(
And all this mess without any advise as you can see from my post HERE and Here
I'm also searching for the Framework problem, but I see that I may incur in other problem...........
:doh::hot:

Any suggestion can help :)
THANKSSSSSSSSS
lio
