My son has a new laptop that had a free W7 upgrade when it came out. After the install it no longer worked.. I went to device manager & poked around but didn't find the microphone (not even sure if I know what I am looking for if it only gives off a strange number.) but I guessed in the sound, videoand game controllers (just 2 high def audio devices which show not errors).. But poked into other ones too.

So how do I start figuring out the problem?

Right click the speaker icon near clock in the system tray.

Choose recording devices. If the mic is not listed, right click in the window pane and set it to show disabled and disconnected devices.

If it is listed, right click on it and set it to be default.
