Solved Buzzing on audio output and loss of mouse/keyboard:can't shut down

Suddenly after starting the computer and going online there was a loud buzz on my stereo output. The output goes from my optical audio. This has never happened before. I flipped the receiver to radio and it's fine. Typing on my backup computer now. The sound from this computer to a different input on the same receiver is fine.

The mouse and keyboard are fine here too. But none of my mice or keyboards work on my main computer. I have a wired mouse and keyboard bridging the two computers with a KVM so they can share the same screen too. On the main computer I also have a couple of mice and a keyboard attached wirelessly. This setup has been fine for a long time. Years.

But with the mouse and keyboard unresponsive (I've unplugged all but the wired one), there's no way to shut it down safely.

Can someone provide a plan to diagnose the problem or tell me how you solved a similar problem please?

First up is the machine listed in system specs the problem machine? Also have you tried other mice or keyboards wired or not on the problem machine.
Even if you can get at least a keyboard to work you can safely shut down using that.

Now the set up I do have a problem imagining it in my minds eye it sounds quite complicated. having said that if it has gone for years like that then maybe you have some serious hardware problems with either the plug in devices, the machine components or both.

Now I have Googled KVM (never head of that abbreviation and never used one) and find it is a piece of equipment too that could be going south?

I wasn't able to get any mouse or keyboard to work. They are all listed in device manager and all working properly according to Windows. I had to do a hard shut down, restart and start in safe mode. I restored it to the point before I installed Quicktime and everything's been fine since. Quicktime and Skype are two programs that, for some reason, never fail to really cause problems. Odd. I appreciate your response and concern.

Well seems like they do conflict somewhere down the track and I really can't think of any quick and easy fix. I suppose it cold even have something t do with your security too - if it thinks something untoward is going on?? Possible as some do not like certain programs like the ones you mention.

My guess is the real culprit is the interaction with an old version of Nero, not compatible but I LOVE the photosnap viewer and I ain't gonna shell out big money for the newer Nero just for the photo viewer. I love Easy CD-DA extractor so I don't need no Nero for that! Anyway, that's my best guess. Thanks again for your answer and your concern!

You are probably right mate is there an alternative to Nero? I have had a couple of friends who have had problems with it and they were older versions too.

The version out here is the Platinum and you can get a 15 days trial with it and costs $139 I don't know how much it would be where you are and to be honest I am not into graphical and media stuff except for some audio which is my favourite medium.

Thanks, buddy. For a confusion therapist, you're very kind. The hunt starts to replace the Nero today. I like the way it scans folders but you never know, there might be something as good out there. I'm starting with Picassa today... I really just want a viewer, not an editor but they all come packaged that way now. Someone at Windows Seven Forums recommended it. A lot of people loved Irfanview but I hated the way it operates. Thanks again.

LOL!! yes it is something a fellow who I trained with (RN) said one day when we were looking after some aged care people during the early days and things were not going right and we were in a right mix up so he called it Confusion Therapy - which sort of went both ways LOL!!
I nearly peed myself laughing.

Anyway back on topic yes the Picassa is good and you could even try Paint.NET it is free and really in depth stuff depending on how in depth you want to get.

Just looking for a viewer, no editing at all. Picassa works in slideshow mode and double click mode though not as clear as Nero, which I uninstalled with a lot of other programs I don't use. Saved a TON of space. Now I realize I have other out of date programs. Ayay!!! The buying crying game never ends.

Yep well a lot of those I linked to are really good for viewing as well plus if you do need to just touch the picture up a tad it's there.

Yes well if the truth were known we all have gear that is well out of date and it doesn't hurt to have a good clear out sometimes.
If uninstalling is what you want to do Revo is probably about the best as it is a tad more thorough tha the Windows feature at times in that it takes a real good look at the registry where sometimes bits get left and create problems eh?

Thanks again. I do use Revo for uninstalling and installing as well. I have CC Cleaner but not the pro grade. I have not used the optimize program. If Sean (Brink) recommends it, I have completely confidence in it, as you say. Thanks very much.

Got rid of Nero and other conflicting old stuff. Fixed that problem, caused others but now better. Tnanks!

Yes, there's an old version of MS Word. I suppose I should break down and buy the newer, since it's now available alone without the Office.

Just as a matter of interest I have used the Kingsoft Office suite (free) for word processing spreadsheets etc that come with the same as the Microsoft Home and Student stuff when I have had to and for folks who cannot afford the Microsoft software and find it really good and is compatible with the Microsoft programs.

Never found it interferes with any of the programs on the machines except that the GUI on opening takes a but of getting used to.
