In Windows 7 (64 bit) I've noticed a folder called C:\Program Files(x86) - in addition to the more familiar C:\Program Files. I've assumed (maybe wrongly) that this is where 32-bit apps get installed. Today however, I installed what I thought was a 64-bit app but it got installed into C:\Program Files (x86).

Is there a way to tell whether an app is 64-bit or 32-bit? I can't see anything obvious (e.g. in the Properties dialog etc).

You are correct in assuming that Program Files (x86) is the container for 32-bit applications.

When you install programs they will automatically install to the correction location without any action on your part, so if an application is installed to C:\Program Files (x86) it is safe to assume it is a 32-bit application.

If you want to check I think you can find out via Task Manager and/or Process Explorer. You could also check the installed programs list in Control Panel.

Thanks  I didn't see anything in Task Manager or Control Panel but I might try downloading the Process Explorer app.

IToday however, I installed what I thought was a 64-bit app but it got installed into C:\Program Files (x86).
There are some programs that are installed in both the folders .... but with different contents. One example is MS Office.
ATM I am using Office 2007 32 bit ... it is installed as the screenshot below ...

For office 64 bit, the contents of the folders will interchange !

You're very welcome.

I'm certain you have nothing to be unduly worried about, but if it puts your mind at rest, having a look won't hurt.

I don't think it really matters where it is installed. It is just a convention so don't worry about it.

One way to find out is to launch the free Revo uninstaller. It will only show 32bit programs. The 64bit programs are only supported by the pro version.
