Hi Win7Forum, Problem using headphone socket.
I have two 'virtually identical' old Chinese Netbooks, both running Win7 Pro - originally XP.
2Gb Memory, 250/512GB HDD.
Both have identical hardware, BIOS and virtually all the same software installed, especially drivers such as audio, chipset etc.
After booting both machines from scratch:
1 Using any pair of headphones on first machine is no problem, repeatedly plugging them in switches off the internal speakers and sound as expected comes out of headphones.
2 Plugging same headphones into second machine works ok until first time they are removed from the headphone socket. After removal, reinserting the headphones into the socket results in silent headphones and sound continues to come out of the internal speakers.
No message is coming up on either machine saying "you have connected / disconnected etc" but the first machine works perfectly whilst the second machine misbehaves.
Volume levels working fine, no yellow flags in either device manager.
Tried removing audio device driver on both machines, and letting win7 install its own default with no change in behaviour.
Installed the Realtek audio driver that seemed to be supplied with original machine, again no change - still silence on second machine. Not sure it should actually be a Realtek driver.... but that same driver works perfectly on first machine?

Obviously the headphones and headphone sockets themslves are working properly but second machine is not recognising the headphones being reconnected.
I can't think where else to look.
Help appreciated.

Don't if I can help but, when you go into Control Panel, Sound, Playback on the problem machine, are the headphones shown?

hi W2,
thanx for ideas, but....
Control panel/sounds/playback -
OK first machine has Speakers (default device) and Line 1 Reallusion Virtual Audio (ready)
No good 2nd machine has just Speakers (default device) only.
Neither machine has any mention of phones, whether plugged in or not.
Tested using same sound files on both mcs, using both vlc player and win media player.

I'll get details of driver files installed and supply tomorrow.
Thanks so far,

I asked you to look because I remember that in early versions of Windows, one had to reset the default device when switching between headphones and external speakers.

Since I was going by memory when I asked you to look for the headphones, I looked further into how to check for them. I found these instructions on another web page this morning-

Open Control Panel and select Sound.
When the Sound dialog appears click the Playback tab.
Verify if the Headphone is listed and the right sound card listed under playback devices.
If so, right click the Headphone device and click on default playback device.
If they are not listed, Right click on the blank space and click on show disabled device.
If the Headphone gets listed,
Right click the “Headphone” select “Enable”. Right click the “Headphone” again and select “Set as default device” from the same list.
Click “Ok”. Now remove and reconnect the Headphone and check.

hi w2,
thanx for ideas, but...
The only playback devices on either machine in control panel/sounds/playback are default loudspeakers - doesn't mention any sound card devices etc.
no headphones on either machine even when show disabled and disconnected devices are ticked.
Running out of ideas.
thanx anyway

Hi davethurston,

Just a thought . . .

Under the heading msinfo32 [MS System Information] - Problem Devices . . ., please run MS_Info32_Find_Problem_Devices.bat, Option [2] from here => BATCH PROGRAMS [Standalone] and then upload the results using the tutorial at the bottom of the above link [Upload to SevenForums . . .] and someone will look at it for you.

I hope this helps!

updated sys specs as requested.
I haven't used Internet Explorer for a long time, so had to change default from Chrome to IE11.
I got several script errs, don't know why but seemed to work OK see below:

I deliberately wrote the batch script to delete the EMPTY file so as not to clutter up the desktop.
Anyway, that says that it is not a driver related issue!

Hi davethurston,

Have you tried running the Windows built-in trouble-shooter?

[1] Click Start => Control Panel => System and Security.
[2] Under Action Centre => click Find and Fix Problems.
[3] Make sure that the Get the Most Up-to-Date Troubleshooters check box is selected.
[4] If you see a trouble-shooter that seems to be relevant then click and run it.

I hope this helps!

Hi wither 2,

I'm wondering if installing the Microsoft High Definition Audio controller would work.

That could possibly work, although the batch script I wrote shows that it is not a driver related issue!
If the trouble-shooter doesn't work I was going to get him to uninstall the sound driver and then re-install it!

Hi folks,
1 re troubleshooting audio - no issues found - see below:

Trouble Shooting Audio Playback : Potential issues that were checked:

Check audio device Issue not present
One or more audio service isn't running Issue not present
Audio device is disabled Issue not present
Low audio device volume Issue not present
Audio device muted Issue not present
Audio device isn't set as default Issue not present
The speaker, headset or headphone is unplugged Issue not present

2 In terms of correct drivers, I downloaded specific drivers for these netbooks devices from ecs website in approx 2010.
The website you pointed me to, for PineTrail drivers, wanted to install one of those generic driver updaters . I am uncomfortable letting this sort of software update drivers as it chooses. I tried looking for specific drivers for PineTrail but could only find sites similar to the one you proffered.....

I've tried drivers for XP, win7 32bit(three versions), and about 3-4 Realtek Audio Drivers, all with no change - still not recognising headphones being connected.

3 On another site, I found mention of using regedit to toggle a dynamic device setting - see below:
Type regedit, press Enter.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0007\GlobalSettings.
Right-click the REG_BINARY EnableDynamicDevices, click Modify, and set it to 0.
Reboot.
Windows will now display your headphones as an available audio device, whether you have headphones plugged into the jack or not.
Outcome: no change....

The website I referenced doesn't "require" that you install the driver updater. Just download/install the driver.

i think i must be doing something wrong.
tried to download audio drivers from the sciologness site your link pointed to.
it seemed to want to download .exe files every time. first one wanted to install yahoo and some search manager which i declined. the file it downloaded was then identified as malware by ms defender.
second file i tried installed extensions into chrome even though i declined their kind offer....

apologies if i'm not clicking correct buttons etc.
