Can I temporarilly bypass my router without causing network problems when I reconnect it?

I'll explain. I play an MMO game online that has some severe lag and occassionally freezes. I have tried everything the developers suggest, Port Forwarding and such but it doesn't help. My PC specs are excellant I always run with wireless disabled. I use the router to connect other devices and they too are connected directly with eithernet cable.
When I take the router out of the mix and play with the eithernet cable connected directly from my DSL Modem to the PC the game works much better. I am willing to do that exclusively for playing this game (Rift) but when I reconnect the router later I have to create a whole new network to get it to work. Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

Yes there is an easier way, either replace the router or reconfigure it to work properly. It may help to go into the routers settings and use the DMZ host setting which will allow for a connection outside of the routers firewall which may help with this problem.

I say this because there is no reason on god's green earth for this router to be slowing down or interfering with your connection unless something is seriously wrong with it or it's not configured correctly.

I tried to enable DMZ just now but I get the error: The DMZ destination IP address is incorrect. What IP address should I put in there?
Also, I went out and bought a new router. It's dual band and faster but I have not tried it yet. The reason I focused on the router is because when I bypass it the game works much better. I would like to try your suggestion about enabling DMZ before installing a new router.

On my DMZ host settings there is a list of computers connected to the router, I can just click on a computer name then hit another button so the IP from that machine is used for the DMZ host.

So you would need to type in the IP from your machine like 192.168.x.x etc.
