Can I use 20v charger for a 19v laptop?

Hey, I have a 20v 8.xA output charger from a heavy working station laptop that I'd like to use for a small laptop originally using a 19v 2.1A charger.

From what I read, it should be OK. But I'm quite bad at electricity and dont wanna ruin my gear So please tell me! Thanks.

Just for a bump.. Don't! If you have no idea what you're doing then stop! But it dose sound like you may.. Wait for someone to jump in that has more knowledge about voltage and amps. Just my two cents.

You don't say where you read that but to say that "therefore it's OK" is absolute nonsense. I'm surprised the connector on the charger marries up with the port on the lappy! Use the correct charger for the laptop make and model.

Most laptop batteries can be "overvolted" but NOT to extremes.
Mine is 11.1 from 10.8

If you look at replacement battery specs compared to original youll find that there are slight differences.
Not that high up the scale thou.

Its up to you, but I wouldn't use anything except the OEM charger on a laptop. The laptop may not be able to accept a higher voltage, even 1 volt.

I've seen a lot of musical effects boxes smoked because the correct power supply or a sloppy after market power supply was used.

I have to agree with everyone in the thread. Even though it's only one Volt, it might be enough to overvolt the regulator (though this is rather unlikely). The thing you would have to worry about is the extra heat in the regulator circuitry from the excess voltage. Over time, the excess heat and voltage can cause the regulator to fail.

Note that the laptop will only draw as much amperage as it needs from the supply. 8 Amps seems a little excessive for a power supply. It must be the size of a brick.

A good rule of thumb is to always use an OEM power supply for your laptop. They are a little more expensive than a generic, but they are worth it. And really, do you want to damage your laptop with a non standard charger?

Why do you want to replace charges? A most powerful wont improve anything.
There are many other factors to look.
Is the connector exactly same size?
Is the connector polarity the same?

The less important thing is the 20V. Inside the laptop there is a switching power supply to convert the input voltage into battery charge voltage, +5V, +12V, etc.

The answer is simple.
Just use the proper OEM charger that was designed for the laptop.
What that does is eliminates all the tests and guess work.

Surly a needed laptop is worth the proper charging method.
