Can I use the Windows 8 Key for Windows 7?

I have a copy of Vista that I want to upgrade to Windows 8 for $40.

I believe I read somewhere that the key can be used for Windows 7 as well? Is that true?

Like he said no. Windows 7 won't accept a Windows 8 product code and vise versa.
