Can I use this Seagate HD for my HP?

Mike,
Does DiskPart see the drive?

Gp to an elevated command prompt.

type (followed by Enter)

diskpart

list disk

you will see info about the disks that diskpart sees
Does your disk show up?

In any case,
EXIT will exit your from diskpart
and then
EXIT will exit you from the command shell

You can also boot into the bios and see if the disk is shown there.

Do let us know what you find. Oh yes:
WIN | type CMD.EXE | do NOT hit ENTER |
CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER key combo | ALT + Y key combo

gets you to an elevated command prompt
WIN = key with microsoft logo on top

I just tried diskpart and no luck, the computer doesn't even make the dong sound when you plug in a USB, and the drive makes no sound it just gets hot. I took it to best buy and they said they plugged it in and couldn't see anything and if I wanted to send it out for a recovery it would be over 1,000$! I am stumped and bummed out!

That drive appears to be pretty old (~9 years or so). Do you think the drive may be the reason the iMac died?

Well the Imac died about 6 years ago. At that point, it was my first computer and I was being stupid and deleting things. Obviously I had deleted something that I needed, because after deleting something, the screen would just stay blue at start up. When I plug in the drive, I get no sound, just one of the chips on the control board gets really hot. That is the only way I can describe it.

So, you see no references to the disk in:

- BIOS

- diskpart

- Disk Management

Correct? When you say a chip gets really hot, it's really hard for me to evaluate how hot that actually is. If you think that the problem is with the controller board (because of the excessive heat or you see discoloration or heat damaged components on the board) you can try and find a replacement board, but you would have to get an almost exact match. Because those boards change over the course of a model's production run, you can't rely only on the model number. There may be a number on the label that specifies the correct board. Or find ID on the board itself. If you can find a board that was installed on a disk (same model as yours) that was manufacured the same day as yours, or within a few days, you may be in luck.
