Solved Can icon in taskbar be renamed?

I thought I was on to something following the instructions in this thread

to eliminate the second iTunes icon that opens on the taskbar but then I realized doing so leaves me with the icon labeled "iTunes(2)". Is there a way to rename it?

if you can find itunes (2) in the start menu right clicking it should give you the option to rename.
failing that you could uninstall itunes and reinstall it with the new updates and you will only have one entry.

I went through the process again of unpinning the first iTunes icon and pinning the second iTunes icon and for some reason now it is labeled "iTunes" with no "(2)". Hope it stays that way.

You can't have two duplicate (exact same) shortcuts with the exact same name. The reason an icon is named with the (2) at the end, is because it is a duplicate of another exact same shortcut. If you delete the original shortcut with the same name, there is no longer a need for the (2), and it is usually automatically deleted off of the name of the remaining shortcut.
