Can Install 32 bit; cannot install 64 bit version

Have you changed your BIOS settings? The only things coming to my mind which could (?) help you are.
1) If you have changed your BIOS settings, reset BIOS to factory settings
2) If you have not updated your BIOS lately, do it now
3) completely wipe and format your hard disk
4) Use only basic hardware setup when doing a clean install, i.e. no USB or Firewire devices except possible mouse and KB

When it is still not working, it is (in my opinion) a driver issue and you should install 32-bit version.
1) Yes, I have. I have also rolled back to an older BIOS whcih ASUS sshowed me they succesfully installed with. No help. I was using the latest BIOS version 9posted about a week ago)
3) I started like that. In the meantime I have also used a second drive (IDE) and a different partition (on my SATA), all with same result
4) I disabled everything, including IRQs.

Maybe this either helps somebody else or somebody sees a solution. I am very inclined to think it is a problem with Win7 boot file as mentioned on the UNAWAVE article I posted the link to. But I can't prove it, because I don't have a Vista 64 boot file to try. The article was apparenlty written for the 32 bit versions.
I saw another post from somebody that has the same problem but could install Vista. I will suggest he tries this, maybe it is the solution

Wally I know where you could get the 64 bit vista boot file. Our sister site vista64.

Im in it for the duration let me know what happening

I'm also having the same issue but it a dell vostro1200 notebook, whenever I've tried to install a 64bit OS on it it just ends up rebooting every 10min.
But I can't even get Win7 to install.
I can get as far the option to choose where to install the OS and then it just reboots.

I thought it might of been the Dell bios (running A09). So I flashed the latest Compal JFT00 bios (They make the machines) and still no go. I haven't tried to remove a stick of ram yet as I see no point (why use a 64bit os with only 2gb of ram).

Looks like I'm stuck with 32bit for my notebook. I doubt dell would try to sort this issue as there is no option for 64bit OS on the dell support site.

Its seems people are having issues with 64bit linux installs aswell on the vosta1200 also.

Some update on my saga:
- I got a hold of a Vista x64 boot file, slipstreamed it into the Win7 ISO and tried again, no difference
- I also tried a Vista x64 recovery disk and that went as far as trying to repair my Win7 installation, but then it quits saying OS mismatch.
- I downloade 7600 RTM and tried with that, no difference.

It must be somethign with my hardware, I just can't find what. I will keep trying (although I don't know what at this point)

I got my hands on a Vista x64 amd installed it without problems. I loaded the Video drivers and SP1. I had a glitch with SP2, I had to reert back to the previous state before SP1. I might try again later.
from Vista I can call the Win7x64 (RTM 7600-16385) installation and it goes as far as the other attempts, that is, the dreaded "Starting Windows" screen. I tried both a clean install on a different partition and upgrading Vista. Nothing makes a difference. I submitted the problem report files to Microsoft but I am sure they go nowhere. Now I can't find those error files to post them
I am basically out of options. I will try to post my latest experience in the Microsoft Windows 7 forum as well. I don't think anybody can find a solution for that though.

Hi wallyinnc,

Maybe a few redundant questions. But you never know.

I assume your disk is on sata?

How is the sata configuration section set in the bios? Sata, Raid or AHCI ?

CE1 configuration enabled or disabled?

ECC on or off?

Primary display? gfx-gpp-pci ? gpp-gfx-pci? or pci-gfx-gpp?

Plug and Play OS on yes?

Plug and play OS definitely needs to be on. Win7 needs to be able to take over IRQ and DMA settings.

Another hint.

Try disabling all redundant stuff, to minimize conflicts.

A list to turn off:

internal audio
all serial and parallel ports
gameport
hd audio
Firewire (aka IEEE)
Gart error reporting (disabled)

a list to enable or Auto:
LBA mode (Auto)
32bit transfer (Auto)
PIO mode (auto)
DMA mode (Auto)
Block multi sector transfer (auto)

Install only 2gb of ram.

I don't know how big the disk is, but install to partition of 50gb or 60gb, not the whole disk as one big partition.

All these steps together might do the trick.

You might also consider trying another graphics card.

if Win7 install succeeds you can one by one enable the disabled hardware and install the drivers for them.

good luck

I had tried many of your items already, but I went through the list and made sure I covered everything. No difference. It gets stuck at "Starting Windows", at whatever comes after disk.sys
Tks anyway. I will keep on trying

I found It..!

Well, they say some things are just meant to be...

Some quick recap (if you have the patience to read me, otherwise jump to the capital letters): I have these two computers, an old(er) HP Pavillion 1612n and the new one that I built with this Asus M4a78 plus. The new processor I bought (AMD 5600+) I installed in the HP which is my primary computer (simply because I can't find the time or patience to migrate everything). I use the AMD 4200+ that was on that HP in my new build.

When I could not install Win7x64 on the new one I started swapping parts between them (including the HDD on which I installed Win7x64 on the old one and tried to install and " repair" on the new). I swapped basically everything, EXCEPT THE PROCESSOR.

This morning I decided to do it. Many thermal paste stains later I had the 5600+ on the new computer. I started the Vista -> Win7 upgrade that had stopped in the middle and.... it went all the way! IT WAS THE PROCESSOR! I have no idea how that can happen, since the 4200+ is 64 compatible (and runs Vistax64 without any problem) and passed all compatibility tests. It never presented any problem. I don't think I was stupid (maybe a little lazy) for not having swapped processors, but could one expect that? Comments are much welcome (no reinforcement of the
"stupid" option if possible, please :D).

I will now start bugging AMD to see if they can explain and if there is any solution. Being that this CPU is a good 4 years old, I think I am SOL and will have to dust my wallet off and buy a new one, ... but I need to know....

If anybody has advice whether I should just replace the CPU or wait for Microsoft to issue some SP that could solve my problem, please. Having said it, it doesn't sound feasibile, does it?

Also, should I mark this thread as solved? It is not really a solution, at least not an elegant one... I do hope it helps ppl not to spend so much time on the wrong things

But I learned a lot and I met some very interesting people here. I intend to continue contributing and learning on this thread. As I said, some things are meant to be. I do beleive in my signature (not only a MP fan)

Thanks everybody that tried to help. :)

Hi Alex
It is frustrating, isn't it?
I advise you go through this thread, since there were several very good suggestions on basically all possibilities that can lead to this problem. Nobody could think it was the CPU, and I hope yours is not the case (if you have another one you can test, it might save you lots of headaches). The odds of the same problem with an old AMD and a i7 920 having the same problem are slim, I think.
Are you using RC7100 x86 or x64 right now?
Some of the basic fixes you should start with are (sorry if some are too basic):
- double check quality of RTM download. Have you checked the hash? I advise you check it with MD5check
- make sure the DVD is OK. ImgBurn is reliable and burn it at slow speed
- disable in the BIOS all components you are not using (LAN adapters seem to be problematic; I would make sure your IEEE 1394a are disabled). Preferably leave only keyboard and mouse on
- double check your other BIOS settings. squonksc posted a quite good list of what to check: http://www.sevenforums.com/204820-post31.html
- if possible
- use the D-sub connection to your monitor, not the DVI
- use only one stick of RAM. Have you checked it? you have DDR3, have you tested if for any possible problem?
- from what I see your DX58SO doesn't have embedded graphics, so you are stuck with your HD4650, am I right? Do you have another card you can try? Are you able to get to the portion of the setup where you can load drivers? That coudl help

I suggest you start a thread of your own with your problem, people will try to help. If you have more details about your (nice) system specs, better.

Good luck

Thanks you so much for your help wallyinnc :)

you are right its really frustrating...all is working fine under the X86 realease and no way to install the 64 bits.

I use a USB key for the installation, issue is the same with a DVD. I also try other release and its always the same issue...

In my previous post I do not details what exactly happend...

- I boot under the USB key
- I delete all active partitions on my hard drive to have only a primary one
- and when installation arrived to "expand files" computer will reboot after 10% approx, but its not always the same value (it can be 13%, 20%...)

So now I will check all other possiblitys I gave me.

A+
Alex
