If its your data, and not windows critical folders under the c drive you are fine and safe to do so. Reading the UAC links I gave you in full detail should explain why this happens and why you need to click continue. (Not saying you didn't read it all, just saying it should be in there)

Lastly, I'm still using my account as "Administrator". I hope I wont break anything when I change it to "Standard"!

When does one decide when is the right time to make this change? Right after installing Windows? Or once the majority of programs have been installed?

You will not be able to make your account standard user. There needs to be 1 admin account on your machine. You will have to create a new user account with standard rights.

Usually after installing windows. You can still install programs under the standard user account. UAC will auto prompt for credentials and then you will be able to install it.

Its up to you if you want to go this route. I use an admin account with UAC set to always notify. A much safer way is to use a standard account for daily tasks, and have an admin account for things you need to change on the computer, such as programs and settings etc.

OK, a final question then... if I create an Standard user account with my name, then I will always have two user photos to choose from when logging in. Since my standard account will be my name, I'm guessing a best practice is to name the administrator one something different, such as "Admin"? (Actually, would Windows accept both accounts to be named the same?)

My current admin account is my name, but since I want to change that so that my Standard account will be my name, will this change be populated down in the Windows folder structure, where there is \Users\NAME... ?

Windows would not allow 2 user accounts to be named the same. I suggest adding a 1 or a S to the standard user account so you can tell them apart.

You are correct, this will be reflected under C\users

Well, now that Ive installed all my programs... I only have WAMP Server left to install, if I create a Standard account, will I be able to access all of these programs? (there were only a few ones that gave me the option to install for All Users)

Yes you will be able to access all programs. Should they require elevated admin rights, UAC will auto prompt for them. You always navigate to the desktop of the user standard account from the admin account and add shortcuts to the icons on the desktop so when the standard user logs in the desktop icons the admin added will be there.

C\users\*standard account name*\desktop

Oh no! Problem not solved....back to square 1 - how can that be???

Here's whats going on, Im still admin account. I just downloaded EaseUS Partition Manager because I want to adjust partition sizes on my 2TB. I downloaded the setup file to my S: drive (separate internal drive) and double-clicked to run the installer.

I got the SAME message that started this thread:

"Unable to execut file in the temporary directory. Setup aborted.
Error 5: Access denied."

Here's the thing: I've taken ownership of this drive already so why is it giving me this error message? I know that if I run this as administrator (right-click), I will NOT get this message.

Arrghhhh.... so confused and frustrated!

Usage Instructions:

1. Download TFC from the download link above and save the file on your desktop.
2. Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
3. Double-click on the TFC icon.
4. When the program starts, click on the Start button. TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
5. When done, press OK to reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.
6. Delete the installer file you were trying to install and download a new copy from the source.

Hi Andrew, I did EVERY step as you outlined, and after the last step, I launched the newly downloaded installer file and got the same Error 5 access denied message. Like I said earlier, I COULD Run As Admin but this doesnt make sense to me since I am still using the (sole) admin account. Any explanation or solution?

At this point, you might want to consider doing a repair install.

I say this because you keep having issues launching and using exe files, as you get a denied message.

This is the fastest way to fix the issue and get you running again.

When you run as the admin account, does everything work fine?

Hi Andrew... the idea of resinstalling Windows again (which I just did last week) is highly unappealing! Here's another clue: there is a folder on my E: drive (which is part of my 2TB projects drive) that when I tried to open gave me the following popup:

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder."

This is unexplicable because its on a partition I had chosen to Take Ownership of. Furthermore I am logged in using my Admin account. !?! but interestingly this is a folder (as well as another) that used to be included in my user library before I did the resinstall.

I wonder if all of this mess started when I had to resize partitions some time ago. (I didnt touch my C: drive but who knows...could it be this had something to do with it?)

Everything I read here tells me it's likely some of the tweaks you've done which has corrupted the User account, so as with a reinstall you want to limit what you reimport so that hidden AppData tweaks which contain the corruption are not brought back into a pristine new Account, Repair Install, or Reinstall.

Win7 is so light it cannot stand much tweaking outside of normal user settings, so if you go about that course again i would save Restore Points before every change.

Saving a baseline System Image after doing a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 (same for retail) may be your best approach since you'll also learn what works best based on thousands we've helped with here.

OK I will look into all this guys... BTW, would it be a problem that I only have 4 to 9 GB left on my C: drive? (120GB SSD)? Could this be what is causing problems? I'll eventually replace it with a 256GB but right now not financially feasable.

You can move User folder data to another HD, link it to the User folders on C using Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forum and Library - Set Save Folder - Windows 7 Help Forums

thanks greg - im already familiar with how to do this - i just wondered if having low space on C: (approx 5 to 8 GBs) would be problematic... that was more what I was interested in finding out because it is showing the "red line" rather than the blue line for that drive. im guessing even if its in the red, having still 5GB should not cause any issues (even with the temp directory)...unless Im wrong?

Question#2: If/when reinstalling Windows, is it best to give the main account the name "admin", so that it will be Users/Admin/.... and then when I create a Standard account, I can give that one my name so that it will be Users/Orlando/... ?
