This is for a friend......and he now can not get into Win 7 Pro. After an update for a certain "free" anti virus, he now asked for the Administrator password. He never had a password setup. He can get into his wife's portion but not his. Is there a backdoor to see what password might have been designated?

I am the friend that bugmeso is referring to.

When I press enter for the password, it does not accept it.

My wife's account is not an admin

I could not get into msconfig (asks for password), nor could I startup in safe mode. Since I shut it off during a reboot, the next restart took me into a windows repair process and let me restore to the last good configuration. It finally let me logon as myself. I then created another admin user (with a password) to hopefully let me get into it in the future if I ever experience this again.

When I finally got logged in as myself, the antivirus program displayed an error and to check online or just close the program. I closed it. Then the machine ran very slowly. I shut it down for about 15mins (I was aggravated). I am now revisiting the issue and the antivirus program keeps coming up with the same error. I cannot get it to run, nor can I uninstall it.

The machine is currently running as expected but without antivirus program. I believe I need to get it uninstalled and possibly try to reinstall? This machine has run great since day one until today. Windows 7 Pro has been great with little issue or error (compared to my old XP machine).

It would help if we knew what "Anti-Virus" program you are talking about. The more information that is provided, the better we can help ascertain your problem.

Until we have more information, I think it'll be a little harder to help.

Hello sskillett, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Glad to hear that you sorted the password issue.

You might see if using the AVG Remover (32-bit) 2014 program from AVG below may be able to help get rid of all it.

AVG | Download tools and utilities

Hope this helps, :)

Once you get AVG uninstalled using it's Removal Tool above, I'd replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials
or Avast free. These are the top two recommended here for the whole five years, whereas no one has ever recommended AVG since it bloated up and we see frequent problems with it.

Thanks. I will do that.

Thanks all for the assistance.

FYI...the error that I first received was 'the user profile service failed the logon', which only came up with my admin logon. Since I created the new admin w/password account, I thought that maybe if this ever happened again in the future that I could logon using my new admin password.

Am I correct in my thinking?

I was able to use the remover successfully and then I installed Avast and all looks to be working as expected. I'm a happy camper again.

I'm pretty methodical about what I install or allow to be installed on my own PC. I work in the shipping/mailing industry and most of my customers who have PC based systems love to install junk all the time. Drives me nuts. I do alot of remote PC support, but primarily the applications that my company sells - not typically Windows or Microsoft products. I have learned alot about Windows, but probably not enough to scratch the surface. Glad to know I can find an answer here if I need it. Everyone has been very helpful.

So...Thanks everyone for your assistance. I will also keep these references handy for future issues (especially the Win 7 troubleshooter). I also have visited several parts of the forum to learn more than I need about the Win 7 OS.
