I do suggest switching to XP. That will give us enough time to work on a hardware problem, should the BSODs persist.

It might work a little better than the 64 bit; but you are still faced with the fact that HP does not offer updates for Windows 7 for your machine.

You shouldn't need the x64 version at all, with 1GB RAM.

I recommend going with XP.

Unfortunately, you are correct. It is called planned obsolescence in order to sell new machines. Keep in mind that the hardware in your machine is older, too, and may not support some of Win 7's features. In the long run, you are better off getting a new machine.

My only advice is to get a good machine capable of running Win 7 64 bit. Get at least a middle grade machine, not a bargain machine. The guys in the hardware section of the forum could give you you plenty of advice - probably more than you ever wanted. :D

The best to you.

Sorry, each computer is a little different, and thus it is hard to give exact instructions for that.

Reboot your computer, and press F2 to enter setup during the first screen. Look around in there for a setting to disable your onboard sound.

Just a word of caution: don't change settings you have no idea about. Doing so could cause problems you don't realize right away, and you could forget you changed them and have problems later on.
