When hovering over icons in the taskbar there is a delay before the appearance of the popup with the details. This seems to be a new feature. Is there any way to reduce this delay?

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies. I've tried adding the key to the registry but that hasn't done what I wanted. I think you may have misunderstood what I was referring to. The attached screenshot shows the kind of popup I meant. Although the delay on the Aero effects is ok there is a 1 - 2-second delay before these little popups appear, which didn't happen with earlier versions of Windows.

Then my original link should work for you. You have to restart the machine (explorer specifically) before the changes take effect.

Well, I changed the value of MouseHoverTime to 10 but this hasn't made any difference. The tutorial suggests that it's only necessary to log off and then on again but since that didn't work I followed it up with a restart but that hasn't worked either. After the restart I verified in regedit that the change had been made.

I also tried hovering the mouse over Start Menu > All Programs and that still took a lot longer than 10mS to display, in fact it seemed more like the default 400mS.

Hi Brink,

I must admit I hadn't checked that. I have now unchecked Animations in the taskbar and Start Menu but, again, that didn't made any difference. However I have now changed the MenuShowDelay key value and this has made a difference to the start menu but still no change to the taskbar, which is the one I really want to change.

Gwaihir,

Well, it doesn't appear to affect that pop-up then. I'll have to do some more digging to see if I may be able to find something for that one, and post back with it if found. :(

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced and right-click to create a new DWORD and name it ExtendedUIHoverTime.

Now double-click on it and give it a Decimal value of “1” click OK, close out of Registry Editor, then logoff and back on for it to go into effect.

Brink, the only question I have is the Decimal value. Should that be 1 or 100? The tutorial I got online uses "1". Does it make a difference?

Darryl,

Only that the lower the number the lower in milliseconds the time delay is. It's just a matter of preference for the amount though. 1 would give you a very quick taskbar thumbnail preview opening. :)
