Can you install Photoshop 4.0 on Windows 7

I love Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and do not want to upgrade nor learn a new version. I need a new computer but am hestiate in getting Windows 7 Home Version if I can't install Adobe Photoshop 4.0 (release date 96-98). Has anyone had a successful install of this program?

Try this. Copy your PS folder from XP or(?) to your flash drive. Transfer that folder to your x86 folder in 7. Make a shortcut to your start menu. Try to start it. It will tell you such and such .dll file cannot be found. There will be five to seven missing .dll's. Just Google and download each dll and place them in the photoshop folder. This is how I got PS 5.0 to run in my 7 x64.. It works fine for me. If you try a direct install you are probably going to hit a wall?

Yes, if you plan to use Win 7 32 bit. I have Photoshop 4 running fine on a 32 bit Win 7 PC.

No, if you plan to use Win 7 64 bit. Photoshop 4 will not even install because it has a 16 bit installer and 16 bit apps will not run on 64 bit Win 7.

Photoshop 4 is the only app I have that won't work on 64 bit. I figured the advantages (?) of 64 bit were not worth what I would have to pay to upgrade to a newer Photoshop version.

Okay I will be buying this pc with the home version of Windows 7 pre-installed, so do I need to do something to switch it over to the 32 bit version if it is running the 64 bit?

You don't install. You simply copy over to the x86 folder withe the rest of the 32 bit stuff. Then add the missing dll's to the PS folder. It works just fine. I have a few programs from the Win 95 days working just fine in 7 ULT x64. They will not install but they can be made to function very well via folder moving. They register themselves the first time you open them.

Okay, I'm going to go ahead and buy the computer because it states on the website that it is the 64 bit version and do as you instructed by moving the files over to the x86 folder and ps folder. I'm trusting you on this one!!

My advice... don't spend any money based on my trials. If you have the hardware and software on hand it won't hurt to take a shot. Don't forget I have 7 x64 Ultimate and Photoshop 5.0 sooooo your results may NOT be the same? Ult. has the WOW (Window on Windows?) feature for older programs. I don't know if all the versions have that Good Luck!

I use PS 6.0 on 7x64 just fine. Although I've had it for a quite a few years and have just been transferring the PS folder comp to comp instead of installing it. Have never had an issue doing this.

Okay, I was really interested in getting 4.0 to work. I have photoshop 7.0 but don't like the text tool at all.

@ outlander - thank you, thank you!! I bought the computer and did exactly what you instructed last night and it worked like a charm!! I was also able to install Photoshop 7.0 from the installation disc with no problem, but not 4.0 as you stated. So I just moved the PS 4.0 folders from comp to comp and it worked!! I also did this with another 16-bit program and that worked too!! Now I got a upgraded computer with more memory, better features and I get to still use my old programs!! Can't you see me smiling all the way from over here

Don't give up. You may have to train it a bit. Try right click "troubleshoot" then apply settings. See what that does. My 5.0 runs really well. Did you get popups asking for missing dll's?

yes I did and I added the missing dll to the photoshop folder. The program starts without asking for missing dll's but as soon as I start using the lasso tool and really working in the program, it start crashing on me every 10 to 15 minutes into my work.

Why not use it inside of a virtual machine running a OS from the stone ages? Probably can use VirtualPC or VirtualBox both free.

I tried what you said by copying a working model of Adobe Photoshop 4.0 from my XP Pro system. I copied the folder to a portable drive and copied the folder to the x86 folder on the Win 7 system. Attempting to launch program only gives me a popup that says "There is not enough memory (RAM) to launch Photoshop."

I have 16 Gb installed and 8Gb available. I tried editing the Photos40.ini file but some permission issue came up.

With the knowledge gained in these posts, I bought a new windows 7, 32 bit laptop comfortable that I could install my copy of photoshop 4.0. I saved all of the files to a flash drive, but then kept trying to locate an x86 folder which in Windows 7 does not appear in the programs on the computer. I discovered that with the 32 bit system the folder for "all programs" is in effect the x86 folder. I copied all of the photoshop files there in a folder I called photoshop and when I found the installation file, it installed perfectly with no further efforts needed. I am extremely pleased and thank all those before me who have shared there wisdom.
