I was using the HIPS that is built into Comodo but I don't want the firewall because I am happy with my modem firewall and Windows firewall.

Can somebody recommend an easy to use HIPS only program?

Thank you :geek:

yes, use Comodo´s Defence +, just turn off the firewall.

Can't I use something else?

i don't want to have to disable 90% of a program, what a waste of space.

well, you can turn off the firewall.
but why not use OA´s firewall instead of W7´s ?
it works very well and it´s easy to configure.

no, not right now.
i´m using an old PC with a P4 2.4GHz CPU myself, so i have not had any need to look for 64-bit firewalls (yet).

but i´m going to build a new PC, i already have 2 64-bit CPU´s, 1 Intel & 1 AMD.
i bought them cheap, but have not been able to decide if i want intel or AMD.
now i have finally decided to use AMD, as it offers higher FSB´s.
i´m going to buy a new motherboard next week, so maybe i should start looking for 64bit-compatible firewalls...

So basically there is no such thing as just HIPS program? It always has to come with some type of firewall and extras software?

I really just want HIPS to compliment my Windows firewall.

hi !

RoloDman: take a look at: Outpost Security from Agnitum: Firewall | Internet Security | AntiVirus | Network Security
their firewall is compatible with W7-64.
although not free, they offer a lifetime-license for 50 USD.
i´ve used Outpost previously, it had a userfriendly interface and was easy to configure.
it has also performed very well in fx. Matousecs tests previously, but it looks like their latest version has not been tested with the new "148-test":
Results and comments - www.matousec.com
it also performed well in my own tests.

I really don't know :p

I liked how HIPS worked with Comodo but I don't want the Firewall and tha entire program if I am going to disable most of it just to use HIPS.

I guess I don't really need it at all :geek:

Ahh... I see. Here's what I know about these kind of things... In internetwork world, there's a subsystem for detecting and preventing intrusion. These are Intrusion Detection System and Intrusion Prevention System (IDS/IPS). The idea is, you need to detect something in order to prevent it from intruding. Some of these systems have several detection methods i.e. behavioral analyzer, rule based, or maybe both. It doesn't block/flag something as intruder without proper checking, and it doesn't check everything blindly either...

HIPS on the other hand is Heuristic Intrusion Prevention System, it's a blind, brute-force-super-checker, it checks literally everything as it happens in a system. IMHO, these kind of systems are at best can be categorized as "stupid" or "blatantly idiot", resource hogger, and overall ineffective. Combine a HIPS with a novice users that always agrees/OK-ed to everything he/she sees, you got your self a non functional HIPS system...

Your current "defense" system is OK, I don't think you need HIPS to complete the list. IMHO, I suggest you add "common sense" to complete the list instead of HIPS...

Well I have common sense :geek:

I use virustotatal and Jotti's when I download a new file. I also do research on anything I install.

When you say my setup is "ok", do you mean it's good but nothing special? Can you recommend anything else I should do?

It's good, good enough for normal users. If you want to increase your security, I suggest you practice "safe computing", that is using a limited user account for day to day use, have hardware firewall in place, enabled software firewall (windows's will do), have an anti virus/anti malware installed, and don't plug flashdisk that is suspected to have some bad payload. If you're paranoid, have another box running Linux/UNIX, and plug/copy/download anything you want in there, scan the payload there, once you're sure that the payload is safe, copy it to your PC... Other than that, yours is OK... :)

zzz2496

Ps. MSE is good enough for normal users...
