Solved Cannot access own folders through network share...

Hello!

I have a small problem browsing my own shared folders. That is, accessing the folders through Network in Windows Explorer.

I can access folders on other computers (and they can access mine) in the Network but not my own. Windows hangs forever and gives me an error that I cannot access that folder.

Also, I cannot access my own public IP address when on that very samme IP. These issues may be related to the extent that I cannot access localhost when I'm on that host.

So, I can browse the folders on the local drive (e.g. C:\NAME\SHAREDFOLDER) but not through \\[LOCALCOMPUTERNAME]\SHARE ...

This issue cannot be reproduced on the other computers in the Network.

Any ideas?

You normally cant access your internet ip from within you local network as you using NAT how do you connect to the network cable or wireless. Its not clear what your trying to do your logged in to your own pc and trying to access your own shares is that correct? can you ping localhost or 127.0.0.0 ?

Pinging 127.0.0.0 gives a "general error" - 100% loss?

Yes, correct, logged in to my own pc and trying to access my own shares (through Network-folder in Explorer). Connected to LAN via wire/cable.

It's no big deal - just can't figure out, why this only applies to my pc in the LAN.

Automatic DHCP all way round. Static IP given from the router (cable).

Private profile:
Network discovery: on, File and printer sharing: on, sharing: on, mediastreaming: on, filesharing (40/56 bit): on (non-default), password protected sharing: off, home group: off (non-default)

Furthermore, I have disabled the "sharing guide" in Explorer - cannot remember why, but somewhere along the road that made sense in solving another problem.

Just reviewed the thread.

I did another ping to both localhost and 127.0.0.1 which I believe it should be. And no problems pinging those.

I have tried several things: I cannot access e.g. \\LOCALHOST\C$ - it just times out, no error messages or anything. But all the administrative shares seem ok (C$, IPC$, ADMIN$) when viewed in Computer Management.

I suspect that the problem is related to the fact, that I don't have any Previous Versions of files which used to Work. Maybe VSS cannot access the local share when it needs to...

I seem to have solved the problem and it was in fact related to the administrative shares - this means that I have solved the problem with the VSS also

I'll try to narrow it down further since the issue with the VSS/RPV is a problem for many people when searching online...

Apparently the problem was with the "TCP Window Auto-Tuning"-setting which should be set as follows:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal

Setting this to "experimental" will break your administrative shares thus impairing Restore Previous Versions (the dreaded "No previous versions available"-error) and making it impossible to browse own shares locally.

I have since figured out that certain software such as "Logitech Harmony Remote Software (7)" is dependent on administrative shares being accessible. If they are not the program will launch with an unresponsive blank window and hang. I suspect other software might act similarly.
