Going back to your original post, did you download the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version of the registry editor you're using?
Obviously, whichever one it was you need to be using the other.
As for not having an external hard drive for backup purposes, which is the worst-case scenario.........a hole in your pocket or a hole in your precious data?
External hard drives are not expensive so a few bucks more on your credit card won't hurt.
