Hi everyone out there.

So after my computer have served me well after a couple of years, I suddenly run into a boot problem.

My computer can no longer boot into windows, and i get the following message when starting up my system:

"BOOTMGR IS MISSING press ctrl+alt+del to restart."

After some googling and trying to solve my issue, I run a startup repair as i have found that to be the most common issue with this problem I have, but with no success. when I run the startup repair from the recovery disk i get the following description of why it cannot run the startup repair:

------------------------------
Name: Disk failure diagnosis
Result: completed successfully. Error code = 0x0
Time taken = 110ms

Root cause found:
------------------------------
Bad Hard Disk:

------------------------------
------------------------------

So im am now wondering if my computer is dead or if there is a way to fix this issue. I hope I have given people enough detail to work with, since this is the first time i have a issue I have posted something about.

Note: my hard drive makes some kind of *click* noise - and it happened suddenly after rebooting my system, aswell as I getting the error.

Tobias.

Hey Tobias and welcome to SF :),

Clicking sounds and Bad hard disk usually mean only one thing in my experience, New disk time!!
(but dont hold me to that as someone else may have a fix!)

In the meantime:

Try running the chkdsk /f/r command:

Start> type in search cmd then right click cmd at top and run as Administrator.

At the prompt type chkdsk /f/r (note the space between chkdisk and /f/r

Let that run and post back any errors.

Cheers

Hi,

sorry yes, you can do it with your recovery disc....my bad :) (think my eyes just scanned to Hard disc Bad!!)

You could also read this and then try this option as your disc may not be totally inaccessable:

Hi again, so I tryed to run the chkdsk thing, and when it was done i restarted the computer and it still gets the message: BOOTMGR IS MISSING.

Btw I forgot to mention earlier that it takes a while (much longer than before my pc died) to detect IDE drives.. I don't know if this is important or not, but thought I would mention it :-)

for the fix you linked, it doesnt fix my problem, since i cant get further than the

B) At the C:\ prompt, type cd boot and press <Enter>.

Hi Tobias,

Can you tell me if the drive is recognised in the bios?

Since you are unable to run the tests or get into windows and start up repair doesnt work I think your best bet is to replace the drive and reinstall windows ;-(
You could try and re-format the drive but personally I would buy a new drive.

Sorry I couldnt be more help

Cheers

Before you do anything, crack open your desktop and determine what brand hd it is.

With the help of a friend, and his or her pc, download that manufacturers diagnostic iso (web site support); burn it to disc and boot up with it and run all the tests.

This will give you the true state of your hd.

If you can't find the specific manu's diag, get Seatools. This will most likely work.

Worth a try to be 100% certain, good suggestion :)

But as he has "The click of Death" which is usually caused by the head being bad and not being able to sense the positioning data...it crashes, the only other things to cause this fault (in my experience) is either not enough power or too much power suppplied (which maybe worth checking out power supply voltages), or the chips gone bad. :(
