Cannot download any program

I was using Firefox and Spotify. They stopped working. I uninstalled them and tried to download them again but it said I was not online. I have tried to download Windows Repair Tool and Fix and Otimize Windows 7 but could not download them either.
My internet works for news and E-mail.
Please help

I wouldn`t download anything to optimize windows 7.

But apparently you can get out to the net no problem.

What happens if you try to download say Ccleaner, if you don`t already have it installed.

Something you could try.
Remove Norton using their online removal tool and install MSE at least for testing.

Well with all the Norton problems we see on this site I just though it was a starting place.

I did get CCleaner to install but not sure what I should let it delete. Still get "connection with server could not be established" on firefox. I think it downloaded, it just wouldn't install. Spotify said the same thing.

I understand you concern and it nothing to do with being elderly. I have never known of Ccleaner hurting anything when using the default setting as installed.

It should only be used by those that are very comfortable in Windows 7 Registry.

Do you still have (I.E.) Internet Explorer installed and what version if so?
Does it work as it should with other internet sites?

Keeping us informed on what has worked and what hasn't worked for you will help us guide you. If in doubt of something please just ask before doing. It will be a lot safer that way.

Sometimes after downloading and installing something a reboot of the computer does wondrous things.

Other than a Norton problem I have run out of suggestions at this time.

You may have 'adware' .... let's see if you do.

First, flush the DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file:
Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

attrib +r +h +s hosts

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Save as flush.bat to your desktop.

Right click the .bat file (it has a gear icon) and choose to run as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

Next, download AdWareCleaner AdwCleaner Download to your desktop
1.Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run As Administrator to launch the application.
2.Click on Delete button.
3.Confirm each time with OK.
4.Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart. Please post the content of that logfile in your reply.

Note: You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt as well - n is the order number.

Have you tried to use Internet Explorer? Most MS sites are pick about browsers.

Exactly. 1st off, have no fear when using ccleaner, I have been using it for years with no problems. Use it to delete your cookies, browsing history, everything, if you want. It will delete your passwords and what not so just make sure you know them all in your head, as I do.

You can sweep your registry with it until it shows no more problems. I have never, ever, had a problem with ccleaner doing this. Everytime you run and install windows update, run ccleaner. You won`t believe all the crap windows update doubles up in the registry.

I gotta concur on CCleaner's registry cleaner, it is NOT very aggressive and I've used it (daily) for about 7 years.

I uninstalled Norton and downloaded it. Believe it or not, I could get back on Firefox and Spotify. Thank you all for your help.
