Keet-scott, do you have a plain vanilla copy of Windows 7?

Slasher - I only have the recovery partition that came with my laptop. It performs an install with relevant drivers but I dont know if you would deem that "vanilla" or another kind of flavour all together :)

The recovery is not vanilla, as it comes with other OEM bloat-ware along other drivers. Do you have a friend that has a Windows 7 install disk?

Hi guys,

Well I did a back up of data and drivers and got a copy of the plain Windows 7 installer .iso which I burned to DVD.

I then repaired the laptop back to factory settings using the recovery console to get a clean slate for the new install. I then changed the boot priority in the BIOS and shoved the DVD windows installer in. all goes well until the installer starts t load after loading files and I get the blues screen with:

STOP:c000021a {Fatal System error}
The Master subsystem Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000006 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system is shut down.

I'm going slightly mad. In fact, is the definition of insanity not repeating the same actions and expecting different results? If so I'm there already.

Is this a problem with the installer .iso, or is it a problem with my hard drive not being "clean" of the previous install? I performed a chkdsk scan and it all came back clear of mistakes.

Dude, you don't need to do anything to your existing install. All you need to do is make sure in the BIOS, that it is set to boot from DVD drive first, and make sure that your Windows 7 DVD is inside your laptop.

At what point exactly do you get this BSOD? While it is installing Windows 7? You have to wipe the HDD clean before you re-install Windows 7 again.

Hey it comes up when I'm trying to install Windows from the DVD. Very near the start when it loads files from the DVD. It doesn't even get to the HD options. I thought that the HD was reformatted when you load the DVD which wipes it for the new install. It doesn't even get to that choice before the BSOD appears. Do I need to reformat the HD before loading the DVD? If so, how?

This is strange, can I ask you what program you used to burn the iso file, at what burn speed (eg. 4x), and which computer you used.

No, I used mine to download last night and saved to external HDD. Although I think I see where you're going with this....I'll try downloading on GF's machine and write to DVD with a slower speed (x6).

Actually, 4x is best. And make sure the .iso file is clean (slipstreamed updates are ok though), and the correct bit (64 or 32) and correct version (eg Ultimate).

Hi Slasher,

New issue. I run the new clean installer DVD. I'm pretty sure everything is fine with the iso file and it's definately the Home (Prem) x64. It opens Windows Boot Manager saying Windows has failed to start INsert the disc to do a repair.

File: \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Status: 0xc0000098
Info: Windows failed to load becasue the kernel is missing, or corrupt

Any ideas?

Then this error you are getting is from your current messed up Windows install. Your BIOS should be booting off the CD and proceed to install a fresh Windows 7. Is it not booting from the DVD?

Yes it's definitely booting from the DVD. I can hear it working. It loads files for about 2 mins and then it shows the Windows logo and then shows the error.

I also emailed the OEM support and detailed all my issues. They replied asking me to reinstall the Microsoft Installer except they gave me a link to the 3.5 Installer which is for a different platform so it gives an error when I run it on my 7 x64 machine. Does this make sense at all or are they as useless as I suspect?
