Desktop is an old emachines, ca. 2009; Vista 32 SP2, winfast mobo, Athlon 64x2 4800+, 2gig RAM. No install disks, had that useless "recovery drive", which I deleted. (A neighbor bought it new, I helped her set it up, when moving a few months later she sold it to me.) I added a vid card and heavier PS, later replaced cpu with a 6000+ and Hyper212 cooler and added second HD. This was intended as just an interim, online, system while I built a new gaming rig; but health issues with no insurance meant it soldiered on while I sold the components for that new system.

Now I always considered emachines merely low end office fodder, much like Packard-Bell 25 years ago, but this one surprised me by running many of my favorite games - MS Flight Sim, numerous racing sims, Oblivion, Torchlight II, etc. - in 1080p with decent fps. It is now on its third vid card, fourth PS, and second cpu; but maintaining Vista became onerous, hence trying the upgrade install of Win7; however we get it to work this must last til I accumulate components to build something newer. (It's difficult to justify the cost of even a mid-level gaming rig now when that is equal to the cost of an MRI ... which i've been putting off for a year now.)

Out of curiosity I ran MGADiag on this old Inspiron laptop, which has Win7 installed from the same disk used for the desktop; it passed with flying colors, so I assume the problem on the desktop must lie with that OEM Vista being incompatible with the upgrade or my upgrade key.

Those oem machines will have what is called a slic table in the bios. The older slic tables can only be used to activate vista. The slightly more recent slic 2.1 table work for vista or win7.

Oem installation/recovery media activates by matching an oem file with the slic table. Therefore dell recovery media will only activate with a machine that has the dell slic table.

You can have a look with rweverything
RWEverything – Read & Write Everything

Click ACPI, then click the tab that says SLIC

This pic was taken by Phillip Yip, which saves me the bother of digging out an old oem machine.

The marker structure on this desktop is near identical to your screenshot - Dell, SLIC v2.1, only difference is OEM Table ID here is QA09.

So, am I just SOL with Win7 on this system? Or can we twist its arm some way ...without losing the installed software?

(And after reading all this I worry that my next project may fare no better - installing Win7 x64 to an old, but newer than this Vista system, ASUS mobo from an HP Pavilion; though that will be a clean install on a new SSD.)

Not sure what you mean by this desktop.

What is the slic table on your emachines T5246 motherboard bios?

If a machine has 2.1 slic ( as in the screenshot ) it should oem activate offline with the matching oem recovery media ( either win7 or vista).

A machine with dell 2.1 slic should activate offline using the dell vista media, or the dell win7 media.

A machine with Lenovo slic 2.1 should activate offline using the Lenovo vista media, or the Lenovo win7 media.

A machine with HP slic 2.1 should activate offline using the HP vista media, or the Hp win7 media.

and so on.

If it had the earlier slic, then it would only oem activate offline with the matching oem vista media ( not win 7 ).

Therefore machines with the earlier slic ( or no slic) need a separate license for win7 which use online activation.

The desktop system is the ex-Vista machine on which I did the Win7 upgrade; Vista was an OEM (emachines) install with a recovery drive; Win7 was installed from a standard DVD.

I've no idea what OS was originally with the ASUS/HP mobo, it was purchased used - board/cpu/RAM (powered up once, bios is HP).

Noticed I have a restore point created by the Win7 "upgrade", would that safely put me back to the Vista install so could try this again? Or would that fail since there is no "windows.old" folder?

I have never tried that, but I would be surprised if it does. How big is it ?

You could try it and see if you like. Better make a backup image first.

To use win7 on that machine ,you need a win7 license obviously.

I thought that's what I had when the activation code was accepted and there were no "not genuine" popups.

Where did the activation code come from?

I just entered win7 retail key and had to call ms to activate. Maybe that is needed for win7 activation now ( except when using slp offline obviously).

I got the install disk in a box full of assorted computer stuff at a yard sale years ago; it was in an old music CD case and the code was written inside the label, along with an "upgrade" code. Dug it out of storage four years ago when I wanted to replace W10 on this laptop, made a copy, wrote the codes on the disk, and put original back in storage.

Are there two different "codes" - by which I presume you mean 25 digit license keys?

You can check them and see what that might reveal

Download The Ultimate PID Checker 1.2.0.606

Dot where it says windows 7 and then enter the key then click Go

....

Yes. I hear them called activation codes, license keys, registration numbers ....a rose by any name.

One of them had "upgrade" written beside it.

When I installed on this old laptop there was no problem; when asked for the number I used the first one and system said it was activated "genuine" etc.; then manually started updates and got SP1 and whatever else was available ca. Jan 2017.

When used to upgrade the Vista system I wasn't sure what number to use (instructions online weren't clear on this) so first tried the number from the sticker on the computer case, that wasn't accepted, so used the "upgrade" number with the disk and thought that worked (that's what i get for thinking).

well the complete key is 342DG-6YJR8-X92GV-V7DCV-P4K27, and its the product key stamped on all Dell W7 Ultimate during manufacture and as i said before it was NEVER issued with an install disc....... if this machine did not originally come with Ultimate then the install media contained a MOD

ps you'll find that key all over the net

The X-15 indentifier relates to a W7 (no SP1) Canadian version

Interesting. So I have a bogus Win7 disk, or a bogus activation, or just a bogus Win7 upgrade?

Neither system I've used this on ever had Win7. The Inspiron laptop was originally Vista but had W10 when I got it; the emachines desktop was always Vista, til I tried the upgrade a few weeks ago.

If I can get the desktop fully functional the laptop is gone (wipe the HD and give it away as is - no battery, flakey optical drive, dieing vid card).
