Cannot set IE11 as default browser

I am having a problem setting IE as my default browser. I have selected it as default in 'Choose access and defaults'' but in "Set default programs" IE isn't listed as a option. Any help/advice?

Have you turned it off?,
Check via

ControlPanel >> programs >> then top LEFT features, another window will open and IE will be there,
It should be ticked, if not tick it, a reboot will be needed.

Hi,
Uncheck all of the other listings they apply to the other browsers on the same line.

One of them might throw a fit and have done some interesting locking out of making changes

Open each one and go to their settings and uncheck make them selves default and restrict changes.

My guess would be Vivadi which is weird in it's self as a listing

Where are you suggesting I Uncheck the other browsers? If I remove access it deletes the program.

ie11 is grayed out all the others can be unchecked.

I do not get that prompt after apply it simply saves the settings and that's all.
Internet explorer is not grayed out for me either :/

I believe you probably picked up more than just a new browser

Save Adwcleaner to your desktop and right click it and select Run as administrator
Use the Download now @ bleeping computer button
Start the scanner and remove what it finds by using the Clean button
AdwCleaner Download
Post the scanner results.

Already run Adware Cleaner...nothing found. The IE was grayed out as it was the one selected to be default. Doesn't matter which browser I choose, the choice will grey out after selecting. Have run Malwarebytes Pro and anti-virus...nothing found.

Yes..I uninstalled Chrome and Vivaldi. Reinstalled Vivaldi. I only get that message if I remove access from Chrome or Vivaldi. I do not get it if I remove access from Firefox.

Makes me wonder about those two browsers and what all tagged along with the installation of them ?

If you are ok with editing the Registry, run regedit

Drill down to HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Capabilities/
look for a value named Hidden
If it exists and is set to 1, change it to 0

Thanks for the reply..I did as suggested and the value is already set to '0'. A second look at my 'Make Default'
page makes me wonder why there are only 6 programs listed there. There should be a lot more...media players, etc.

Suggest:

Make sure that IE or other browsers are not running then go to:

Control Panel> Internet Options> Programs tab

Set these options.

Exit the window then launch IE and see if you get a pop up at the bottom of the page offering the option to make IE default browser.

Thank you for replying. Yes I did that and yes it asked. I am not having issues anymore. I completely removed Chrome and reinstalled Vivaldi. IE stays as default now. However, IE is still not listed in "Set program Defaults" nor any of the expected default options. I have tried a system restore. No go. I ran sfc /scannow and chkdisk. No errors. Through scan with Malwarebytes Pro and Panda...as well as adware cleaner. Nothing found. My computer runs perfect. No strange programs found or running. It's just the lack of programs (default choices) being shown that bugs me.

I would create a new Windows Admin account, log in with that account, and see if the Default Programs list is different.
Maybe something is corrupt in your current account.

It sounds like you've tried everything possible to fix this.
Unless someone else has some other suggestion you haven't tried, you might want to consider a Repair Install:

I would create a System Backup Image before doing this, so i could get back to what i have now, if things don't work right.
I create periodic System Backup Images with Macrium Reflect free, so i can recover if/when problems happen.

Chrome has an aggressive install and makes changes like that and does not undo stuff it changes on uninstall
One of the main reasons I do not like Chrome that and they removed the custom install so you can select do not make it default...
