Canon iP4500 on Win7 64-bit

Hi folks,

Not a newbie to PC's but I am new to Win 7!

I want to install my Canon Pixma iP4500, but the Canon website lists no drivers for Win7. It is listed as compatible in the MS Compatibility checker.

Do I take it that I just connect the printer and wait for Windows to find a driver?

I presume that if it does, it will give me the same printer functionality as it did in Windows XP? Or do I need to install one of the "add-ons" in the Canon website?

If I go to the Canon page, select "Drivers and Software", Select OS as Windows 7 (x64) all I see is "Printer Driver add-on Module". The actual driver isn't listed - which is why I posted here

The Softpedia page says it does officially support Windows 7, so what's the difference?

Assuming the Softpedia version is OK, do I install the driver first and connect the printer when asked (as one would when installing from the OEM CD)?

Hi John,

You can download the software from Softpedia and follow the on screen instructions.

OR, as you are using windows 7 you can connect your USB printer by following few easy steps mentioned below:
1. Plug in the printer, and ensure that it's turned off.
Also, set up the printer with ink and paper and all that other good stuff, according to the directions that came with the printer.
2. Connect a USB cable to the printer and to your laptop.
3. Turn on the printer.
Since you're using a USB printer it installs software for you on its own. After the printer has been set up and recognized by Windows, you can either print or save some energy and turn the printer off.

If you're having trouble adding your printer, open the Control Panel and double-click the Printers or Printers and Faxes icon to display the list of printers available to your computer. The Add a Printer or Add Printer task can be clicked to run the Add Printer Wizard, which helps you complete the printer setup task.

Thanks to all who helped - it intalled fairly painlessly! I downloaded the Vista driver, ran it and connected the printer when told. It then spent some time searching Windows update and eventually told me that the printer was ready to use. It works perfectly - the dialog box etc. are identical to that in XP.

Not completely sure which driver I ended up with though - the Vista one or the MS update one

Is it worth adding the "Printer Driver Add-on Module" from the Canon website?

It doesn't arm the system to have it. It is a add-on module v2.0 driver for fonctionality and compatibilities.

The add-on module is the driver (well, part of it). It's called like that because you have to install it after letting Windows 7 install its own basic driver. Connect the iP4500, turn it on and let Windows install its own driver, allowing Windows Update to search if necessary. Following that, install the add-on module and you'll get full functionality. This procedure is explained in the Canon download page. No need to mess with Vista drivers - although it's probably the same driver in different "packaging".
The full functionality is probably what you see in XP, various expanded options for photo printing and manipulation, full double-sided support etc.
