Hi, I have an old Canon Canoscan scanner that I would still like to use but, as I have just bought a new PC that runs under Win 7 Premium 64-bit, the Canon website does not support this version of OS, only the 32-bit one which I am assuming wouldn't work ? . Is there any way of getting it to work with the new PC or am I stuck with either using it with another PC on XP or dumping it ?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Be aware that there are 3 versions of the program - One trial (30 days I think), the other two paid - Standard (39.95) and Pro (79.95).

The 80 dollar version allows you to do color profiles and you get free update for life? - I've had the program since 2003 and can still use updates using my old PID number.

Anyway I'd recommend it if you can't find a driver for your scanner, and of course the software supports your scanner. That even if you have to pay for it it's probably better, and cheaper than buying a new scanner.

Good luck.

Nope, just download it from the links given in earlier post and install and your old scanner will be recognized and work like mine did in Win-7 which had no support driver for that OS because it was too old.

Canoscan D1230U on Win 7

Thanks for the quick response. Are you referring to the Vuescan software or the Canon Europe software?

As a trial I downloaded the package from Canon Europe but it wouldn't install on an XP laptop I would have been willing to use for a while, although it is very old and is getting a little sick. Several other folks say they tried this and they also had trouble with the install which asked for a CD.

I have moved cross-country since my scanner last worked and my main XP computer just got too sick to keep up so I bought a new HP at a great price and it had Win 7 on it. I have not been able to find the original CD since the move, and of course there were updates that had been released since the original install.

Can you clarify which software you used and what version of Win 7 you have?

My scanner is a Canoscan D1230U and I like it's features because in addition to flat scans I use 35mm slides and negatives, and 2 1/4" slides and negatives and have made holders for all combinations.

Sorry to be so wordy but I'm getting close to buying an Epson 600 Scanner as a last resort. Not in my budget but I have so much old stuff to scan for my family (as they grew up and became parents and grandparents themselves).

Thanks,

DAW

I am referring to the Vuescan software. I have a similar scanner but when I moved to Win 7 home premium 64-bit there was no driver available on the Canon website and I was told there would not be one released so I thought, like yourself, I would have to bin the scanner until, through this forum, Vuescan would allow me to continue to use it - a driver does not need to be installed, it just worked. Install the software, then when you plug in the scanner (mine is USB) it should be recognized as a source and will do all of the tasks it did previously in XP using the original driver. Start with the trial version and see how you get on, let me know.

I installed the evaluation copy of Vuescan and then plugged in the Canoscan D1230U with no additional software other than the Vuescan. I then plugged in the scanner and Windows 7 said it would search for a driver . . . Then it said it couldn't find a driver and didn't recognize the product.

The pop-up message from Vuescan said to turn Vuescan off, connect the scanner, and it then reported that it could not find a scanner attached. This corresponds to Hamrick who told me that Vuescan would only work on a computer which had a scanner native driver installed.

You must have been very lucky.

For now I have uninstalled Vuescan and did a system restore back to the point just before I downloaded and installed Vuescan.

Sorry to hear that - all I can tell you is.... I have a Canoscan N1240U scanner and when I moved to Win 7 from XP there was no support driver so I heard about the Vuescan software on this forum and after I installed it the scanner was recognized as if it were a W7 driver and worked as it did on XP - to be quite honest I didn't belive it either but it has saved me buying a new scanner ( I should point out I "obtained" a full version of the software which may make the difference). As you say, perhaps I was lucky !!

Yeah, it may just be that you got into a good combination of pieces of software.

Did you have any part of the old driver software for your 1240 installed, or partially installed, on your Win 7 computer? When I tried to install the version from the European source on the XP laptop it simply burped and quit installing. I actually never tried to install that on the Win 7 machine because if it didn't install on the XP machine it probably wouldn't install on the Win 7 machine. I noted that several folks were unable to install that download for a variety of reasons, it always asked for a CD somewhere along the line. (Or hinted at a CD, anyhow)

I may have mentioned that I got a note from VueScan as follows:

Hi Don,

This only works when there's a working driver installed from www.canon.com

OK, am gonna try and make this real clear..... I bought a new computer with Win7 home premium 64. When I went looking for a suitable driver for the scanner there wasn't one and Canon told me it would not be supported. So, on this forum, I heard about Vuescan so I got a "full" version from a friend although the trial copy should at least tell you if its gonna work. Once installed, everything worked, no previous XP or any other driver already on the machine as it was not long out the box. So whoever is telling you a driver needs to be already installed clearly isn't giving you the correct info. I have been using the scanner fully functional for months now.

So, try again.

I tried it again with the trial version and no luck. I finally got the answer from VueScan. The scanners are different. Ed saved my sanity!

Hi Don,

That's because VueScan has a built-in driver for the N1240U that doesn't need any Canon software to be installed.

VueScan doesn't have a built-in driver for the D1230U, so it needs the Canon software to be installed.

Ed Hamrick

So now we know !!! I've always been lucky.... :):):) looks like you'll either need to invest in a new scanner or run it from an older machine on XP (or you could try using XP simulation under W7, or dual boot - just a suggestion).

Well, as others have found, the download from Canon Europe doesn't install on my old XP laptop.

I will search for the CD but at the same time campaign for an Epson Perfection V600. They are down to around $173 here.

Strange, the V600 is a far different from the 600.

Check the install notes that goes with the XP driver you tried to install - for them to install and work correctly assumes that you are at correct service pack level. I believe the latest was SP3 so you may need to be at this level for it to work.

I'll check that. I know that I have been at SP3 since it was released. I note that there are two releases available, one ending with .c and the other with .d. I may have downloaded the .c version a month or so, not sure.

Canoscan d1230U on Windows 7/XP

According to the Vuescan developer the compatible scanners have a built in driver that his software uses. Not so for the d1230U, so I upgraded to Windows 7 ultimate and downloaded the XP option. XP programs run just fine inside that emulator. Only problem is that the driver available from England doesn't install. It might install if I knew how to do it.

If anyone has been able to install that driver on XP please let me know how you did it.

Alternatively, if anyone has an original CD for the Canoscan D1230U I would be pleased to pay a fair price for a copy.

So close yet so far!
