HI,

I have 2 1.5TB eSATA USB2 external drives. I want to set them up as a mirror.
My first drive is formatted NTFS with all my data - the second is brand new - no partition.

I select the first drive and select Add Mirror and select disk 2 my new drive.
I get the warning that the drive will be converted to a dynamic drive.... I select OK.
I then get the following error-
"this operation is not supported by the object"

Any ideas???
Thanks
Howard

Yoou may just need to set up a dynamic partition from the free space

Retried using free space - Still fails with same error

Hi Ken,

Many thanks for the reply. I shrank the volume and tried creating a new mirror using the free space. The wizard goes through fine - gives me the summary and when I click OK to proceed it fails with the same error. Interestingly when I try and repeat the process the drive letter I chose last time is unavailable for selection??

So I tried converting my existing disk to dynamic first - and the convert to dynamic fails with the same error!! So it appears its the initial conversion that is generating the error......

Are they separate units plugged into different USB ports?

Yes - the drives only have the one USB connection each so they are plugged into separate ports on the back of my Dell Optiplex 745

I think that is your answer. Whilst it is perfectly possible to have a RAID array on internal disks, either connected to the motherboard or an add-on card, it is not possible to have such an array if connected externally via separate USB ports. You can via separate eSATA ports, since they are basically the same as the on-board ports except external. You can have an external USB RAID, however the disks need to be in a single enclosure which can utilise RAID, i.e. has hardware support, and which only requires a single USB port.

Hey, many thanks for that. The two drives both have eSATA ports but my server only has USB.

Looks like it's back to manual copies again 8-(

Thanks for all your help guys!

I had the exact same problem, same error message and everything - but mine is from one USB port.. I have two drives sitting in a docking station. I want to mirror them, but I keep getting this same error message. So, my problem is not because of connecting them from two USB ports... thoughts?
